About Christian Stolte
I am passionate about making complex scientific data understandable.My award-winning work was recognized as innovative and helpful to the biological community. Our novel visualization of insulin signaling resulted in new biological insights (Cell Snapshot). The web resources for which I acted as the design lead (Aquaria, TBDB, Compartments, Tissues) have been widely used and cited by the community. I have been actively involved in the biological data visualization community by helping to organize the VIZBI conference series since 2011, conducting D3.js workshops, and teaching a masterclass on data visualization. I have been invited as a speaker to SciVizNYC, BioVis, Bio-IT-World, VIZBI meetings, and participated in several workshops on visualization of biological data in Japan (Shonan) and Germany (Schloss Dagstuhl).

At NYGC, where I worked in the data innovation group, I designed and built tools for research and clinical applications. As a designer, my role was to capture the scientific requirements of a project and translate them into visualizations that help the users; design a user experience and user interfaces that make the data explorable, relatable, and actionable; design and code prototypes that serve as a proof of concept; and help break down and translate the requirements in terms that software engineers understand. I designed MetroNome, a visual exploration environment for genomic and clinical data.

Visualizing biological data is at the centre of my work: I am designing and programming user interfaces for bioinformatics tools in the group of Sean O'Donoghue (www.odonoghuelab.org). We collaborate with scientists in CSIRO and the Garvan Institute in Sydney, as well as researchers in Munich, Lisbon, and Kopenhagen. I serve as art director and designer for the animations about cutting-edge biological discoveries, created as part of the VizbiPlus project (http://vizbi.org/plus).
