  • Columbia Journalism Review
    Senior Editor
Columbia Journalism Review Apr 2016 - Jun 2018
    New York, Ny
This role didn't exist at the magazine until I wrote the job description for it. Based off of the responsibilities I'd acquired after working as an associate editor and production editor at CJR for three years, it required a broad range of skills: I edited, assigned, and reported for both the online and print magazines. I helped manage a newsroom of about a dozen writers and editors, as well as a large roster of freelancers, fact-checkers, artists, graphic designers, and photographers. I still served as the production editor for the print magazine—editing, laying out, and commissioning art for every story and managing art direction for the website. And I served as the magazine's copy chief, developing and maintaining a house style guide. I also oversaw special projects, such as CJR’s survey and subsequent report on sexual harassment policies in newsrooms. A large part of my job included mentoring staff writers, hiring and managing interns, and cultivating a broad network of freelancers. In my time as senior editor, I:- Developed a digital content strategy that achieved a 45 percent year-over-year increase in page views. - Edited many of CJR’s most-read stories, including coverage of President Trump, right-wing media, global press freedom, newsroom diversity, technology, the business of media, and reporting on gender and sexual orientation.- Spearheaded a CMS migration from Movable Type to WordPress, resulting in greater flexibility and functionality with visual storytelling, which in turn led to greater digital audience growth.
  • Columbia Journalism Review
    Associate Editor / Production Editor
Columbia Journalism Review Aug 2013 - Mar 2016
    New York, Ny
I managed the production of the print and digital magazine in addition to overseeing a team of staff writers, freelancers, and interns and reporting my own stories. I laid out each issue, designed editorial spreads and infographics, and assigned and managed writers, illustrators, photographers, and fact-checkers. I worked directly with the editor-in-chief to redesign both the print and digital versions of the magazine—in conception, project management, and creative strategy.
  • Self-Employed
    Freelance Writer And Editor
    Self-Employed Nov 2009 - Aug 2013
    Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States
I reported on science, technology, breaking news, business, arts, and culture for local and national publications—including the Weekly Alibi, New Mexico Business Weekly, LocalFlavor Magazine, New Mexico Magazine, and others—specializing in long-form pieces on climate change, water, and other environmental topics. I also copyedited manuscripts for the University of New Mexico Press and wrote social media posts and other forms of marketing copy for local businesses.
  • Weekly Alibi
    Editor-In-Chief
    Weekly Alibi Dec 2007 - Oct 2009
    Albuquerque, New Mexico Area
I directed the editorial department of this award-winning alternative newsweekly, which had a readership of 182,000, the second-highest of any publication in New Mexico (second only to the major daily paper). I'm biased, but the Alibi was also largely considered the state's most-loved paper.I shaped coverage and newsroom standards, encouraging a greater focus on investigative and explanatory journalism (much of which would go on to inform policy matters at both city and state levels). I also pushed for a deeper commitment to daily digital coverage, before that was the norm. I led a talented team of editors, reporters, and designers, collaborating with them to produce exceptional, creative, and impactful journalism in both traditional and experimental formats. As part of my role as a representative of the paper, I frequently appeared as a guest on local radio and television shows to talk about current events, elections, and politics—especially during election season, as our paper's election guides were by far the most in-depth in the state.During my tenure as editor:- The paper won 20 awards from the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies, the National Federation of Press Women, and New Mexico Press Women, surpassing previous awards records.- I increased online readership by more than 40% by updating the newsroom with modern social media strategies.I was also the youngest editor-in-chief in the paper's history, as well as its first female EIC.
  • Weekly Alibi
    Managing Editor / News Editor
    Weekly Alibi Oct 2005 - Dec 2007
    Albuquerque, New Mexico Area
I was promoted to this position 7 months after getting hired as a staff writer and copyeditor. I served as the editor-in-chief's right hand, helping them to oversee the newsroom, direct content, and manage a team of staff writers, editors, freelancers, columnists, and interns. I also led the paper's award-winning news section, which doubled in size under my leadership. In both roles, I:- Drove the newsroom's operations, making quick editorial decisions as well as planning long-range issues and stories- Managed, assigned, and edited more than a dozen reporters- Developed and implemented editorial strategies and newsroom processes to drive audience growth- Cultivated a culture of journalistic excellence- Fostered strong relationships with editors and reporters across the newsroomI also continued to report on my own stories, from occasional breaking news to long-form narrative journalism, several of which won awards.
  • Weekly Alibi
    Staff Writer / Copyeditor
    Weekly Alibi Apr 2005 - Oct 2005
    Albuquerque, New Mexico Area
I was hired on staff after freelancing regularly for the paper. My beats included renewable energy, water rights, the city's animal shelters, Albuquerque's city council, and state politics, but I reported across a wide variety of other topics as well. I was also responsible for copyediting the entire paper (and was selected for the role, according to my editors, because my copy always came in so clean).
  • University Of New Mexico Press
