I work from an Integrative Interactional Approach that draws from various therapeutic approaches and techniques. Interactional psychotherapy assists persons in facilitating effective, sustainable, and satisfying relationships. This allows me to select an appropriate technique based on the individual needs of each client in order to assist them in exploring how they relate with their environment.I provide neuropsychological assessments for a variety of purposes including functional capacity assessments for insurance claims, dementia screening, assessing the functional consequences of traumatic brain injury, strokes and other neuropathology as well as, pre-screening for Deep Brain Stimulation. I also conduct psycho-legal assessment for third party claims.

These assessments included; - Neuropsychological assessments investigating the possibility that a claimant sustained a brain injury during a motor vehicle accident. - Assessments of neuropsychological functioning to determine the needs for curatorship and the capacity to manage legal and financial affairs. - Assessment of the possibly psychological impact of experiencing a traumatic event such as a motor vehicle accident, dog bite or other physical injury. - Assessment of the psychological impact of possible medical negligence. - Assessment of psychological factors or psychiatric diagnoses that may have contributed to inappropriate workplace behaviour. - Assessment of the possible extent of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and the extent to which it affects a person’s capacity to return to military service after taking fire in a combat zone.

I facilitated the Adult & Geriatric Psychopathology module for the 2023 MA Clinical Psychology class. The module consisted of lectures, student presentations and a diagnostic assignment. The aim of the module was to equip students with advanced theoretical knowledge about adult psychopathology to come to an accurate DSM diagnosis, understand relevant aetiological pathways and to translate this knowledge in a practical manner to apply it to decisions about treatment planning.

1 Military Hospital, Thaba Tshwane, Pretoria

After completing my community service year, I obtained a permanent position at 1 Military Hospital. I was primarily responsible for the training and supervision of clinical psychology interns in neuropsychology, report writing, and psychotherapy. I was also responsible for ensuring continuity of service delivery and developing a standard working procedure for the spinal and neuro-rehabilitation ward. I was also responsible for coordinating the intern-training program. In addition to this I developed a three-week training program aimed at equipping the clinical psychology interns with the skills to administer, score and interpret the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale as well as other neuropsychological tests.

I completed my community service within the South African Military Health Services (SAMHS) at 1 Military Hospital. During this time I conducted individual-, couples- and family therapy with persons of varying military ranks, racial- and age groups. I have gained exposure in the psychiatric ward by attending ward rounds and liaising with the MDT in order to facilitate the optimal treatment of clients. I have also, in collaboration with Capt. F.N. van Zyl developed a neuropsychology training program aimed at equipping the clinical psychology interns with the practical knowledge and skills required to conduct a neuropsychological assessment. The training program consisted of four lectures aimed at creating an understanding of the basic principles of neuropsychological assessment, the various neuropsychological domains and the practical assessment of these domains by means of qualitative and quantitative neuropsychological assessment. Furthermore I was responsible for continuity of service delivery in the spinal- and neuro-rehabilitation wards. In terms of research, I assisted in the two studies focused on the standardization of the Grooved Peg Board and Letter Cancelation Test for the military population. These studies are still ongoing.

In order to gain experience within the academic realm, I lectured part-time at the Department of Psychology, University of Pretoria. I was responsible for the psycho-diagnostic module aimed at training the MA Clinical Psychology students in effectively using cognitive assessment measures. This included training them in understanding the concept of intelligence from various perspectives as well as the implications of the diverse South African context for neurocognitive assessment. The assessment measures to be covered included: Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale – 3rd Edition. (WAIS-III), Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale – 4th Edition (WAIS-IV), Junior South African Intelligence Scale (JSAIS), Senior South African Intelligence Scale (SSAIS), Ravens Progressive Matrices (RPM), and the Bender Visuo-Motor Gestalt Test – 2nd Ed. (BVMGT-II)

Whilst awaiting the results of my M.Sc. degree, I was temporarily employed as a research officer at Hexor. I was responsible for managing the telephonic and online data collection from various health care providers ranging from specialists, general practitioners and primary health care nurses in the study entitled ‘Estimating the burden-of-illness related to genital warts in South Africa.’ This entailed the recruitment of physicians to the study, the collection of data of an extremely sensitive nature, managing payments of honorariums and various other administrative and coordination responsibilities.

I provided individual, couples, family and group psychotherapy as well as psychological and neuropsychological assessment according to the needs of the clients. I worked towards getting as much exposure and experience to as many therapy techniques and assessment tools as possible. I obtained experience in facilitating therapeutic growth in persons from a variety of age, language and gender groups.

I served as a research assistant in a study investigating the perceptions, beliefs and behaviours of people residing in the Rustenburg areas towards sexuality and HIV/AIDS. This entailed training in sexuality counseling and conversing with a variety of persons regarding the sexuality. I was responsible for door-to- door data collection by means of the completion of questionnaires. This was conducted on a part-time basis under the supervision of community psychologists, Prof. Maretha Visser (University of Pretoria) and Prof. Anna Meyer-Weitz (University of Kwa-Zulu Natal).
