Scrta Research InternNational Institute Of Minority Health Disparities (Nimhd) Jun 2015 - May 2016Bethesda, MdAs an intern at the NIMHD, I work on tobacco policy. To do this, myself and another intern analyzed over 1200 pro- and anti-tobacco advertisements from various magazine sources provided by Kantar Media Inc. (KMI). Based on a coding script that we co-created, we analyzed each advertisement for different areas of content: persuasive approach, color, people, brand, values invoked, health warning and more. In these advertisements we analyzed many different product types including e-cigs, cigars, cigarettes, and more. Some purposes of this study are to learn who tobacco companies are targeting, what strategies they are using to target these groups, and what product types they are marketing to these individuals. With the data we have collected, we hope to inform health communication policies--particularly, how tobacco products are marketed and how this marketing may need to be revised to promote health amongst the appropriate age groups. -

Sip Research InternEunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute Of Child Health And Human Development (Nichd) May 2014 - Aug 2014Bethesda, MdAs an intern in the Health Behavior Branch I will work on various research projects involving maternal, child, and adolescent health. My primary focus will be research on young drivers. Over the summer, I will be using a coding scheme, created by researchers, to code the exit interviews that were collected at the end of this study. Here is a description of the Naturalistic Teen Driving Study: The purpose of NTDS is to evaluate the effects of experience on teen driving performance under various driving conditions. Researchers recruited 40 novice teen drivers at the time of licensure and equipped the teens' vehicles with cameras, g-force meters, Global Positioning System (GPS), and other equipment to provide detailed information about driving performance during the first 18 months of driving experience. Of particular interest is driving performance in the presence or absence of teen passengers and at night versus during the day. Twenty of these teens share a vehicle with a parent, and these parents have agreed to be in the study to provide a comparison group. -
Scrta Research InternNational Cancer Institute (Nci) Jun 2011 - Aug 2013Frederick, Md• As an intern in this lab I perform research geared towards drug development for lung cancer. In this lab we use various biological and chemical processes to view the synergy of varying co-treatments of known chemotherapeutics with multiple nitric oxide donors produced in our lab. To view the effects of this treatment we are responsible for maintaining human NSCLC cells through cell culture techniques (use of glutamine, FBS serum, and medium), by performing western blots (using SDS bis-tris and tris-acetate gels with varying gradients), and assisting in mass spectrophotometry and HPLC to view how the drugs are metabolized in the cells. Through years of research we as a team have produced multiple posters that have been presented locally, nationally, and internationally. Currently we are working on two scientific papers, one of which focuses on the effects of our Nitric Oxide donors in NSCLC cells in vitro and in vivo. -
