Dr. Monte’s dedication to service learning goes beyond her research as she is passionate about her service learning program in South Africa. During this time, it has become very clear to me that Christina is a dedicated higher education professional with a deep commitment to student success. For her dissertation, Christina explored the available literature on service learning and study abroad in order to develop a nuanced understanding of international service learning (ISL) programs. ISL programs, which represent a novel and potentially transformative approach to helping undergraduate students develop global and multicultural competencies, have not been well-explored by empirical scholarship. Having used the available empirical literature to document likely outcomes of service learning and study abroad programs, Christina sought to explore whether there were differences in post-college dispositions and behaviors among students who participated in service learning, study abroad, both, or neither. Her results demonstrated that students who participated in service learning or both service learning and study abroad realized improved outcomes relative to students who participated in only study abroad or neither service learning and study abroad. Reflecting on these findings, Christina offered a series of thoughtful recommendations for practice and future research. Based on the potential importance of this area of practice and research, it is clear that Christina’s work in this area—particularly when viewed in tandem with her impressive administrative and teaching experience in ISL programs—positions her among the leaders in this field.
