Screenwriter - I have learned the hard way that my original concept is not what winds up on the Final Draft. And that if I don't do an outline, my first draft will be the outline. I wrote my first screenplay before the wave of books, classes, coaches and webinars. Screenwriting wasn't considered a craft then, or only to the elite circle that made it to production, and rewriting was constant on set. When my first draft was dissected on a three hour phone call, I felt like i had had a miscarriage.. I cried. I hadn't heard that Hemingway was quoted saying "First drafts always suck". But I kept writing draft after draft. I had a reader at Major Arts Corporation tell me, I'd done a great job. But a writer needed to be flexible and have a open mind. And her role was "part coach, part cheerleader. That changes need not be painful. Best advice I've ever gotten, and listened too. It was shopped in LA and optioned several times. Lastly I pulled out after reviewing the production budget. I'd never have a first again. Probably not the smartest move for an unproduced writer, but keeping it felt better than having it shot and then shelved. Any deal for a writer at that time was a best bittersweet. And you have to play different roles to either protect yourself and script, and let it go to development. Other deals came around, some viable but not good enough. I don't recommend other writers to be inflexible but understand the story you wrote may not be what will be on the screen.I still wasn't ready for success emotionally. I had more emotional & spiritual maturity to experience. Meanwhile, I felt an emptiness inside. So I wrote a children's animation screenplay pilot. Mr. Tinkerton the Groovy Grouper. It won Platinum at WorldFest Houston Film Festival. The creative process has no ceiling. Keep writing.
