Articles about poverty prevention fell into three categories: Besides different types of frugality and caution, I introduced a variety of environmental causes of poverty.
  • Doubleday & Company
    Proofreader
    Doubleday & Company Oct 1980 - Jan 1983
    Smithsburg, Maryland
Those were the days of linotype machines! The type was set with lead, a first galley proof was drawn and the proofreader read the often-handwritten manuscript to a more experienced person to find mistakes. The marked first galleys was sent to the editor who sent it to the author who sent it back. The editor returned the first proof to the plant where the linotype operator made any necessary changes, drew a second proof and sent it for quality control (the proofreader read the first proof to someone else with the second proof). This was repeated (it was hoped no more than three times) until there were no mistakes in the final proof. Then the book was ready to print and was sent to layout before going to press.I exercised the horses of others and eventually took riding lessons on a certain blind Appaloosa stallion. I almost bought him; somebody else beat me to the punch by half an hour!
  • Whiting'S Neck Equestrian Centre
    Bookkeeper-Cum-Working Student
    Whiting'S Neck Equestrian Centre Jan 1980 - Sep 1980
    Martinsburg, West Virginia
I kept the books while taking care of six horses. Whiting's Neck EC was a multi-purpose establishment which bred riding horses and gave balance-seat lessons. I rode most of the stallions and cared for one, a blind Appaloosa. My employment was shorter than I would have liked because revenue was less than expenses, with the inevitable consequence.
  • Suzanne'S Riding School
    Working Student
    Suzanne'S Riding School Sep 1978 - Sep 1979
    Harrow Weald, Uk
With savings accumulated while working in France, I studied horse management in a four-season environment. I did ride, sometimes up to six hours a day, and teach (up to 30 clients), but the greatest benefit I have drawn from the experience was to care for horses. I use this knowledge base to this day. There have been big acquisitions in what is known about horses since then, but a horse is a horse is a horse. Basics still apply.
  • Peat, Marwick & Mitchell
Assistant Head, Word Processing Department, Giegia
    Peat, Marwick & Mitchell Sep 1976 - Sep 1978
    Paris La Defense
GIEGIA was PM&M's administrative division. I was made a better offer than Minerve could make and started as a secretary. In moments when there was nothing else to do, I taught myself how to use the IBM 50-magnetic-card word processor. After a few months, I was promoted to Assistant Head. I trained new staff, did quality control and instituted procedures to avoid duplicative work.During this period, I started riding up to seven days (10-12 hours) a week at the Cercle Hippique de la Foret in L'Isle-Adam (Oise).
  • Minerve Interim
    From Typist To Executive Secretary
    Minerve Interim Jun 1975 - Aug 1976
    Paris And Its Western Suburbs
Minerve Interim was, at that time, the foremost temporary agency in Paris. I was considered to be trilingual because I knew the difference between American English and British English. My French was and is more classical than colloquial; that has stood me in good stead. First though, I spent a number of months converting from a QWERTY keyboard with no accents to an AZERTY one with accents and upper-case numbers. I started at the bottom and worked up, always learning on the job. There were no dry spells. My income funded six days a week of riding at the Manege de Neuilly in Neuilly-sur-Seine.
  • Boston University Mugar Memorial Library

Boston University Mugar Memorial Library Jul 1968 - Jun 1974

In the Division of Special Collections, I was in charge of the History of Nursing Archives. Worked full-time while studying World History and World Religion at BU Metropolitan College's night school. Transferred all my credits from Fisher Junior College and graduated, one of 23 degree students in a student body of 5000, with a Bachelor of Liberal Studies in 1974.
