About Christine Bissonnette

I am a poetry writing facilitator and Speech Arts teacher passionate about unleashing the creativity of my students through student-centred and mindfulness-focused instruction. I founded my company 9 Creative Lives Studio in 2020 with the goal of turning on its head the idea that there’s a ‘proper’ way to write or public speak, and to support my students to allow their imagination, life experience, and insight to shine through in a genuine way — whether they’re approaching a blank page, or stepping onto a stage to speak. For all of my classes and programs, I design captivating lesson plans that feature the delights of writing, speaking, and reading poetry at their centre. With that said, you should know that poetry can expand out to include all sorts of mediums including: scripts, monologues, stories, and essays. I love metaphors, so here are a few to describe my classroom. My classroom is… a playground, an enchanted forest, a budding tree, a skydiver sailing through the clouds (with a parachute).Through my studio, I offer:- Group poetry writing classes (max. 6 participants per class).- Private Speech Arts classes for school-aged students (4-18). You can also: Invite me into your workplace to facilitate a writing workshop with your team! My writing workshops support team-bonding and will help create a warmer/ more compassionate work environment. Topics include, relationship to: work, purpose, belonging, community, play.---“A mind that is lively and inquiring, compassionate, curious, angry, full of music, full of feeling, is a mind full of possible poetry.” - Mary Oliver, A Poetry Handbook

In my private classes, school-aged students (aged 4-18) build a repertoire of poems, stories, speeches, and monologues that they can recite by heart. Students also create original mimes to practice body awareness, and create original speeches and stories based on their life experience and imagination. Additional studies include: improvisation, sight reading, and acting. My students have achieved First Class Honours for their RCM Speech Arts Exams, and come in first place in Speech Competitions at their school — all while genuinely enjoying the poems and stories they’re committing to memory.

Mindful Writing Facilitator -- Offering Enlivening Creative Writing Experiences
9 Creative Lives Studio Jun 2020 - Present
    Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
In my group classes, you'll learn how to write poetry that belongs irrefutably to you and your body. You don’t need to change who you are to write resonant poetry. Your poetry can be a celebration of the logic-leaping delights of your imagination, and of the life experience that transports the listener to your way of seeing the world. Your poetry can be a way of discovering what wisdom you carry within your body when you bravely give it voice.

    WHO ARE THESE CLASSES FOR?

I’ve worked with writers at various stages of their career. I’ve also worked with herbalists, leadership coaches, gardeners, school teachers, accountants, visual artists, marketers, mothers, and folks in the process of figuring out what they want to do next.

My students take my classes: To engage with how they approach writing and to improve their craft; to be in community; as a form of self care; to work through writer’s block; to reignite (or discover for the first time) their love of language; because they’re simply curious about poetry, and what this form of writing may have to offer them.

**No experience with poetry writing is necessary to participate.**
