Christine Bolaños is the Communications Director at Workers Defense Project and Workers Defense Action. WDP is a statewide member-based organization building power for low-wage, immigrant workers across Texas. Through education, organizing and direct services, WDP empowers workers to win fair, safe jobs and become effective advocates for themselves and their communities.She previously served as Communications Director of Jolt Action, the largest civic engagement organization for Latinos in Texas, as its Communications Director. In February 2020, while eight months pregnant, she planned and executed logistics surrounding the attendance of presidential candidates' campaigns at the groundbreaking Jolt Movimiento 2020 town hall for and by young Latino voters. She also managed all youth who asked the candidates questions and media interviews from as far as Japan and France and as close as Houston. The 2016 International Women's Media Foundation fellow reported on women's development and rights in El Salvador. She covered government, politics, education, human interest features, and business for numerous international, national and local outlets. A significant amount of her most recent work focused on women's rights and immigration reaching potentially about 6 million readers. The proud Salvadoran-American's work has been published in The Guardian, The Mujerista, NPR's Latino USA, The Daily Dot, Remezcla, We are Mitu, BESE, Fusion (now Splinter), News Deeply, LATINA Style Magazine, Latino Rebels, Austin American-Statesman, The Crime Report, American Inno, Payday Report and The Trace. She is a first-generation college graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in political science and journalism from Baylor University.In September 2017, Bolaños served as one of three esteemed media panelists who shared their views on "A Citizen Diplomat in the Information Age at the Texas State Capitol." She also shared her experiences reporting in El Salvador during a discussion she led during lunch hour focused on US-Central American relations. The Diplomacy Begins Here regional summit was hosted by Global Ties, Global Austin and the U.S. Department of State, among others. She previously served on the board of the Central Texas chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, as the volunteer editor of Latinitas Magazine, which empowers young girls of color through media and technology; and, as the media sponsor of the Austin-wide Chingona Fest, which celebrates impactful Latina women in arts and culture.

In this role, I managed digital campaigns leading up to the 2020 election, craft and test messages through Jolt's digital platforms, create and implement a strategy for press coverage of Jolt's key events, collaborate with the organizing team to create additional resources and collateral for student chapters and write copy for additional print materials. I led, planned, and executed the media campaign for the groundbreaking Movimiento 2020 Candidate Forum, a town hall for and by young Latino voters in Texas. In this role, I served as a liaison among Jolt and presidential candidates, confirming their attendance at the event and all logistics of their participation before, during, and after the event. I vetted, prepared, and managed high school and college students who asked candidates questions and handled all international, national, and local media interviews with political campaigns, Jolt's leadership, and its youth members. -
FellowInternational Women'S Media Foundation Aug 2016 - Aug 2016Washington, Dc, UsThe International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) selected 6 journalists to participate in the first Adelante Latin America Reporting Initiative trip to El Salvador. A group of six women journalists will report from San Salvador from August 16-25, 2016 on the theme of Women, Health, and Development.The fellows will convene in Mexico City, Mexico for a multi-day orientation and security training before departing for their reporting trips. While in country, fellows will have the opportunity to meet with local journalists, collaborate with international peers, and discover sites relevant to their reporting. This is the IWMF’s first reporting trip to Central America.The IWMF designed the Adelante Latin America Reporting Initiative to support journalists interested in pursuing in depth stories on themes including democracy and governance, immigration, agricultural development, economic opportunity, expanded technology access, women’s rights and development, education, and conservation. The program was launched in November 2015, building on the success of the IWMF African Great Lakes Reporting Initiative. To date, 12 journalists have covered under-reported stories from the Colombia and the Mexico-U.S. Border. Their work has been produced and published by leading media outlets around the world.Over the next five years, the IWMF will lead reporting trips for women journalists to Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and the Mexico-U.S. border. By 2020, more than 270 journalists will have participated, creating new media narratives about the region. The IWMF pays for fellowship-related expenses including travel, lodging, meals and fixers/interpreters unless a selected journalist’s news organization wishes to assume these costs. -
