About Christof Devriendt

Christof Devriendt was born in Ostend, Belgium, 1981. He received the degree in mechanical electrotechnical engineering in 2004 from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). Afterwards he joined the Acoustics and Vibration Research Group (AVRG) as a research engineer to work on the development of design rules for mobile substation. This research involved performing measurement campaigns during road tests and dynamic analyses using finite element modeling. In 2005 he obtained a scholarship from the Flemish Agency for Innovation and Technology (IWT) to pursue a Phd on the development of innovative operational modal analysis techniques based on transmissibility measurements. This resulted in a PhD in Engineering Sciences in 2010 from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and a patent application (EP2682729). In 2010 he obtained a post-doctoral scholarship from the Flemish Fund for Research (FWO) to perform research into the analysis of the dynamic behavior of structures and their health monitoring during operational use (such as aircraft during flight, offshore wind turbines, bridges). Since 2011 he is the RD&I coordinator of “ The Offshore Wind Infrastructure Lab” or OWI-lab (www.owi-lab.eu). The mission of OWI-lab is to support the Belgian wind energy value chain through an open innovation platform in their industry-driven research, development and innovation - and to play a leading role in this as a research and technology organization. The research he is currently coordinating aims to bring down the Levelized Cost Of Electricity (LCoE) of offshore wind by improving the design methodologies, optimizing O&M and extending the lifetime of offshore wind turbines through novel structural monitoring techniques and data analysis strategies. This is currently reflected by the several novel research projects he is coordinating in his domain: ICON BOPTIC, ICON Safelife, SBO Soiltwin & ETF Windsoil, ICON Supersized 4.0. He is also the co-founder of the OWI-lab (VUB) spin-off company 24SEA (www.24sea.eu) that was setup in 2016. 24SEA develops testing services and monitoring solutions for offshore structures. The motivation is gaining the insights that are crucial to optimise the design of future offshore structures, improve their operations and maintenance, and where possible extend their lifetime. 24SEA has grown since then in a word-wide reference in the field of structural health monitoring of offshore structures. 24SEA is currently monitoring the foundations of all Belgium offshore windfarms and has projects in the Netherlands, UK, France, Germany and Taiwan.

    Coordinating the OWI-lab VUB Structural Health monitoring research group, a pioneering group in the field of structural health monitoring of offshore wind foundations. The group has participated in several projects revolving around measurements on offshore foundations, which demonstrated optical fiber technology on the monopile, developed novel tools for monitoring fatigue progression in offshore wind turbines including virtual sensing, Recently the team developed a fleetwide load monitoring strategy based on combining farm wide IOT sensors and machine learning methods. Currently the group comprises 15 members, of which 2 professors and 4 post-docs, all focused on offshore wind or SHM.
