About Christoph Quitmann

I am a scientist by heart and now have several decades of international experience. For the first decade of my career I pursued fundamental research, trying to understand the mechanism behind high-termperature superconductivity. During this research I realized that the instruments I needed to answer my curiosity were not available and thus I decided to spend my time building cutting edge instruments. At that point I was fortunate to be promoted by my managers and given the chance to manage a research lab at Paul Scherrer Institut. This lab built and provided scientific instruments to colleagues from all over the world. In my third decade I was given the opportunity to lead the transformation of a full institute. At MAX IV Laboratory in Sweden my colleagues and I built the brightest x-ray lightsource. After successfully completing this task I moved from academia to industry. Here at RI Research Instruments I lead the accelerator design for the Lighthouse project, a facility to produce medical isotopes using a particle accelerator and avoiding all use of fission material and processes.Since we completed our task in this project at the end of 2022 I moved to the position of Fellow - Science & Technology. This new role allows me to put my previous work and my network to use for building even better research instruments and contributing to the sustainable growth of the company.

    Fellow - Science & Technology
Ri Research Instruments Gmbh Jan 2023 - Present
    Bensberg, Germany
As “Fellow – Science & Technology” I evaluate ongoing and future activities in international research centers and industry. Such evaluations allow the management to take informed decisions on future business opportunities. In my work I make use of my extensive network, trying to get expert opinions on current questions in science and technology. In addition, I take a lead in customer projects of high complexity or requiring special experience. Often I take a lead in the initial phase of such projects, until a suitable team has been formed at RI to take over allowing me to explore new opportunities. In our growing and dynamic company I support the management in optimizing processes and shaping a culture allowing RI Research Instruments to continue its profitable growth strategy and the expansion into new business opportunities.
  • Ri Research Instruments Gmbh
    Head Of Division: Project Lighthouse
Ri Research Instruments Gmbh Aug 2019 - Jan 2023
    Bergisch Gladbach
RI develops and manufactures high-performance components and systems, and provides solutions for scientific and industrial applications, and customers around the globe. As leader in particle accelerator design and construction we are currently working for LightHouse, the first industrial high-power superconducting electron accelerator. It will produce Tc99m, a radioisotope used in about 40 million procedures worldwide every year. Today it is produced using nuclear reactors with significant nuclear waste as a byproduct. LightHouse will do it much cleaner and more sustainable way.My task is leading the project team that will deliver the accelerator, and coordinating with other companies delivering the target, the infrastructure, and the radio-chemistry.

Elected member of class VIII, Engineering Sciences. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences is "an independent organisation whose overall objective is to promote the sciences and strengthen their influence in society". That is a goal I can well identify with and am happy to promote.
  • Faculty Of Science, University Of Copenhagen
Adjunct Professor In Synchrotron Radiation At The Niels Bohr Institute
Faculty Of Science, University Of Copenhagen Sep 2015 - Sep 2020
    Copenhagen, Denmark
As an adjunct professor at the Niels Bohr Institute of Copenhagen University I can participate in teaching and education for students in synchrotron radiation. This extends my possibilities as director of the MAX IV facility to educational activities.I will use this opportunity to get more students interested in the broad opportunities offered by the upcoming MAX IV synchrotron facility in Lund. For this I will occasionally participate in the teaching at KU, co-supervise thesis projects, and host excursions of relevant courses to MAX IV. These activities will broaden the users base of MAX IV and strengthen the scientific collaborations with KU.
  • Lund University
    Professor In Physics (X-Ray Microscopy)
    Lund University Jun 2016 - Aug 2019
    Lund
As a professor in the division of Synchrotronn Radiation I participate in teaching topics related to X-ray science and synchrotrons for many areas of natural science. Students come from the natural science faculty, the technical faculty and the medical faculty.
  • Stanford University
    Visiting Professor
    Stanford University Jan 2019 - Jul 2019
    Menlo Park, California, 94025, Usa
I am on a 6 month sabbatical as visiting professor of Photon Scienc at Stanford University / SLAC to work with the colleagues of LCLS and SSRL. It will be an exciting opportunity to compare recent developments at SLAC with my experience from MAX IV Laboratory. With the LCLS II upgrade under way there is much to be seen and discussed.I look forward to interesting projects in research and strategic discussions. This sabbatical will provide freedom and inspiration for the next decade!
  • Max Iv Laboratory
    Director
Max Iv Laboratory Aug 2012 - Sep 2018
    Lund, Sweden
MAX IV laboratory is a Swedish national user facility hosted by Lund University. It is the first laboratory worldwide to operate a new generation of electron accelerators for producing near the brightest X-ray beams available. The facility was inaugurated in June 2016 and is receiving regular users since 2017. Three beamlines are already in user operation, four are receiving experts to support commissioning and four more are about to start commissioning. In total 16 beamlines will be available for users in a few years. The innovative design of this machine will provide unprecedented brightness allowing previously impossible experiments utilizing coherent x-rays and nano beams.MAX IV is a massive investment of the Swedish science community to provide a world-leading research facility for all areas of natural science. Building a facility with innovative technology and shaping a new organization and culture is a great challenge. As the director I lead the management team and take responsibility for operation of the laboratory as well as for developing the future strategy. This is done in close collaboration with the colleagues at the laboratory, with universities and companies in Sweden, and under supervision by international colleagues. Already today three of the beamlines are financed by non-Swedish organizations. In September 2018 I have resigned from my assignment as MAX IV director and have taken up my position as professor in teh Synchrotron Radiation Division of Lund University.I wish the MAX IV all the best in completing this fascinating project. A full suite of beamlines will be available to users soon and will allow outstanding science. It was an honor to lead it.
