Working at the intersection of economics, engineering, and history, my research brings novel data, technological nuance, and new theoretical underpinnings to our understanding of the workforce, organizational and operational effects of technological change.I develop empirically supported theoretical and applied models and frameworks to anticipate implications of technology change for organizational and process structure and workforce skill needs. I have used my research to support and advise technology adoption and organizational adaptation by companies. My work helps identify points of leverage for optimal technology implementation and provides insights for the future of work.

Data Science FellowAllegheny County Department Of Human Services Sep 2022 - Jul 2023Pittsburgh, PaI use economics, operations management and systems engineering methods to conduct applied research seeking improvements in delivery and organization of human services resources in Allegheny County. I currently lead two principal projects:1. Designing and deploying a rate-setting methodology and incentive structures for $530 million in annual behavioral health reimbursements by the department.2. Developing an integrated professional development pipeline from human services clients to training programs to employers in advanced robotics.I also work on operations topics such as reorganization of human service delivery and catchment areas and process optimization for assignment of child welfare cases. -
Research ConsultantCarnegie Mellon University - Heinz College Of Information Systems And Public Policy Nov 2022 - Mar 2023Pittsburgh, PaI conduct research to better understand labor supply chains across industries and occupations, with an interest in private and public policy interventions to facilitate individuals in laddering across occupations toward mid and long-term career goals. This research connects to applied work I am leading with Allegheny County DHS and the ARM Federal Manufacturing Institute to develop an integrated pipeline from human services clients to training programs to employers in advanced robotics. -
Postdoctoral Research FellowCarnegie Mellon University May 2022 - Sep 2022Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United StatesMy research addresses three questions of interest for our understanding of technology change, labor outcomes and opportunities for policy and strategy:1) What are the implications of two simultaneous technological changes (automation, parts consolidation) for labor skill demand within an occupation? 2) Why and how do technological changes differ in their effects on skill demand? 3) Why and how do technological changes have different effects on occupational (skillset) demand and managerial structure? -
Doctoral StudentCarnegie Mellon University Aug 2016 - May 2022Greater Pittsburgh AreaI study how technological change affects process structures and the future of work. My research approach combines economics and systems engineering to understand how technology changes the division of labor and hence the content and structure of work. My work includes deep empirical studies of the photonics industry and formal modeling of firm decision making based on operations data from photonics, automotive manufacturing, software engineering and historical data from the 2nd Industrial Revolution. -
Analytics Research InternAllegheny County Department Of Human Services May 2015 - Aug 2015• Studied DHS employee turnover, compensation dynamics and demographic trends and presented report of findings to DHS Senior Staff• Evaluated statistical validity of criminal recidivism risk screening tool at the Allegheny County Jail and developed a prototype risk assessment model that improved on the predictive power of the screen without requiring any additional variables• Developed model of student absence dynamics within Pittsburgh Public Schools, showing that the probability of ending an absence streak on any given day was largely independent of length of absence -
Honors ResearcherCarnegie Mellon University May 2014 - Aug 2014Conducted grant-funded research into the development of implicit cultural institutions into formal political institutions in Early Modern France. -
Commodity Leading Indicators Research InternVesuvius Usa May 2013 - Aug 2013• Researched commodities and trade dynamics relevant to primary materials in refractory production• Developed leading indicators and constructed predictive models for primary materials• Presented research to managers of Vesuvius purchasing department for final inclusion in corporate strategy
