About Christopher Arnott
Professional journalist for over 25 years. I've been pigeonholed as a New Haven-centric arts reporter, but have proven myself as a reliable writer in a number of other fields as well.I deliberately sought out a more creative and opinionated form of journalism—alternative weeklies—because of the variety it offered, but successfully expanded into mainstream trade publications, journals and even some legal and government document-writing.I'm best known as a theater critic, but have also written regularly on popular music, dance, visual art, literature, film and comic books. Outside of the arts, I've penned an about-town column, political endorsements, hard news, tourist guides, sports profiles and a vast array of other assignments. Since leaving full-time journalism to become a freelancing stay-at-home dad in 2007, I've been a columnist or regular feature writer for a number of community-oriented publications, such as New Haven Living and Hartford Decades magazines and was the first "head writer" at the Daily Nutmeg website. When the New Haven Advocate (the alt-weekly for which I wrote for over 20 years) morphed into the arts publication CTNow in 2013, I continued that association and also started placing theater stories regularly in the Hartford Courant. In my spare time, I've been working on some fiction and non-fiction projects. I also find time to help friends with press releases, speechwriting, reports, script revisions and general editing. In 2012 I got involved in local politics, as a Democratic Town Committee Co-Chair in New Haven's Ward 2. I also served on the State of Connecticut arts council and the City of New Haven Cultural Affairs Commission. These positions engaged me in a whole other type of writing: campaign literature, revising of by-laws...I find the mix of assignments immensely satisfying.
Listed skills include Editing, Interviewing, Music, Freelance Writing, and 32 others.

Columnist, Features Writer
Write regular monthy "Best Bets" columns and arts features for new culture/lifestyle magazine published by the Hartford Courant organization.

Host
Created and host monthly storytelling/spoken word/poetry/theater/reading series at New Haven nightclub. Get to the Point! is held on the second Monday of each month, with a diverse group of local performers, personalities and literary types. There has also been one successful out-of-town event, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Get to the Point! is being used as the model for a statewide storytelling network organized by the nationally funded Connecticut arts-placemaking intiative Create Here Now.

Ward 2 Co-Chair
Elected March 2012 to two-year term. Delegate at regional and state Democratic conventions.
Journalism Instructor
Created and implemented journalism aspect of online high school publishing/broadcasting project. Taught students in Journalism program at Metropolitan Business Academy (MBA), during the school day and in after school sessions.Worked directly with the Freedom Through Expression program's founder and overseer Hashim Allah, and with MBA teachers and administrators. The funding ran out, or I'd still be doing this now.
Contributing Writer
Arts reporter for weekly arts section published by the Hartford Courant. Write regular stories for the print edition, plus some articles exclusive to the website.
Head Writer
Wrote 3 articles per week for online/email cultural magazine.
Managing Editor
Was full-time staff at the Advocate, under numerous titles but basically serving as arts editor and critic-at-large, for 18 years. Left on my own volition to become a stay-at-home dad, just before the newspaper industry's biggest troubles began and the corporation that owns the Advocate chain went bankrupt. My work appeared in every issue of the New Haven Advocate between 1991 and mid-2011, and I still contribute theater reviews and features. Besides Managing Editor, my full-time Advocate titles included Acting Editor, Contributing Editor, Senior Arts Editor, Arts Editor, Columnist, Listings Editor, Staff Writer and Contributing Writer.
Owner/ Manager
Managed well-known avant-garde independent bookstore in New Haven. Did fairly well with it, but was overwhelmed by inherited debt and wasn't able to learn the ropes rapidly enough. Still daydream about how I would start such a store from scratch in these very different times.
