Chris worked as a manufacturing engineer in the sheet metal and powder coat shop. He collaborated with teams in product assembly and quality management on interdepartmental projects. Chris demonstrated initiative and adaptability by quickly learning about unfamiliar topics such as machine shop operations, heat transfer, and the pretreat process.Chris' projects focused on improving manufacturing processes. Chris collaborated with operators to complete data collection to understand heat loss from the pretreat for powder coat system. Chris designed a lid system and used optimization techniques to schedule tank heaters, reducing heat loss and saving $40,000 annually. Chris collected and analyzed data to quantify time in system for pipe jobs moving through the sheet metal shop. Chris was responsible for collecting user input and ensuring that improvements to a database used to track quality issues met user needs.

Chris worked in the Advanced Manufacturing Engineering group to improve a variety of processes and develop a few new processes. He coordinated between managers, engineers at different sites, and technicians to develop effective new procedures for tracking manufacturing gages using a new software tool. He wrote work instructions and led training sessions to prepare personnel for the transition to these new processes. Chris used a distance based cost metric and Excel VBA coding to determine the best arrangement of hundreds of small parts used in subassemblies. His analysis yielded a solution resulting in a reduction in part picking time of about 10 hours per month. Chris earned the ESI Exemplar Award after going beyond the initial scope of a chemical inventory project to complete a vendor comparison, saving $10,000 over three years. He also completed projects in fixture design, electronics testing and repair, and circuit board testing.

Chris worked with several interns to collect and analyze patient data, in order to find trends related to treatment, facility, and diagnosis. This analysis culminated in a presentation of findings to company executives. He attended and actively participated in meetings and conferences with various levels of corporate management. These meetings exposed Chris to corporate decision making and the process of change management.

Chris' work with Dr. Eseonu began with aiding in the completion of a healthcare needs assessment report for Linn, Benton, and Lincoln Counties Workforce Investment Board. After the submittal of the report, Chris second authored a paper examining the importance of learning from industry leaders and training institutions before making healthcare policy. After June 2014, he focused on his thesis work. Chris' thesis examined the application of lean manufacturing principles to the health care training system.
