As part of the pathology team my role is to ensure a 24/7 microbiology service is provided to hospital and community clinicians in the greater Bay of Plenty and Waikato area. This includes servicing approximately 4,500 patient samples per day. The day to day workload includes the completion of all tasks associated with the receipt, investigation and reporting of various patient samples in accordance with laboratory standard operating procedures and international guidelines. This role involves constant communication with a variety of healthcare professionals from nurses to consultants. This required a good understanding of medical terminology and excellent verbal and written communication skills. There is an onus to keep up to date on current and future developments in laboratory medicine by attending regular in-house lectures and journal clubs. Other responsibilities included contributing to the quality management system in the laboratory through internal and external quality control, validating new instruments, internal audits and training new staff members.

This role involved working as part of a team in a busy clinical microbiology laboratory. This fast-paced, and often high pressure environment demanded excellent work ethic, accuracy, teamwork, communication and meticulous attention to detail. My main duties were the processing of patient samples from the hospital and greater Munster area in the study of micro organisms that cause a range of disease including, but not limited to, sepsis, meningitis, tuberculosis, HIV and food poisoning to name a few. Carried out my duties in an efficient manner to ensure the highest quality of service was provided to our clinicians and patients. This role often required me to work independently to provide an on-call service. During the COVID-19 pandemic I was a member of the COVID testing team and we were responsible for the timely processing of thousands of swabs daily from both the hospital and community.

- Previously employed as a medical scientist in the histopathology lab in the Bon Secours.- My roles in this laboratory changed on a daily basis, working from a rotation system. - This ensures my involvement with various cases from Cut-Up where I assist the Pathologist on duty in the preparation of fresh tissue, through processing, embedding, microtomy and finally case assembly.

- Took up a 3 month locum in the histopathology department at the CUH after finishing my inservice training. - My roles in this laboratory were primarily split between Microtomy and Case Assembly. - Became fully competent in the operation of Leica and Micro microtomes for the cutting of routine surgical and urgent tissue blocks. - Case assembly required the organisation of large and small cases based on levels of urgency. - Also involved in the ordering up of immunohistochemistry and various other requests from pathologists.

Pathology

- Completed a 9 month medical scientist internship in the Pathology Department of this hospital.- This training involved spending approximately 7 weeks in each different lab within the clinical pathology service including; haematology, blood transfusion, clinical biochemistry, microbiology, histopathology, cytology, immunology and serology.- As an intern I was constantly assessed throughout this 9 month period via library projects, oral examinations and a research project. - Carrying out my research project allowed the immunohistochemistry lab to change the way they prepare control slides for immuno testing by preparing control slides ahead of time and storing them in the lab.

Cork

- Bartended in this busy establishment in the heart of Cork city for the duration of my university years.- Roles included assisting customers, preparing floats, taking care of stock and general bar maintenance. - in 2017 I was appointed supervisor in my department and some of my extra duties included counting cash at the end of service, delegating various jobs to my colleagues, and attending managerial meetings.
