Science And Technology Research Intern
The Center for Health, Environment, and Justice is a national environmental organization founded in 1981 by Lois Marie Gibbs, the community leader at Love Canal. The main philosophy of CHEJ is teach and empower grassroots groups and individuals through organizing, leadership development, research support, and legal assistance. As the Science and Technology Research Intern, my role was multifaceted. One component was to analyze and develop technical data and reports on superfund sites and other polluted communities, in order to convey the crucial scientific information in a manner more easily digestible for the layperson. Another key responsibility was to assist in the process of building a viable legal case for the afflicted communities against the source of pollution. I would compare samples from the community with federal and state laws, and develop a historical account of any illegal actions undertaken in the area. With that information, I helped to write letters and recommendations to local groups, attorneys, and even state level officials. I spearheaded the new campaign on reducing lead in America's drinking water, by developing publications of fact-sheets and guidebooks for impacted communities, preparing information for effective meetings with senators and policy-makers, and attending meetings with EPA officials. Outside of this major campaign I was able to take on a number of independent assignments and other large research projects. To increase outreach, I also translated a number of important organization materials into Spanish.
Research Assistant
The overarching goal of the research project was to provide California farmers native bee alternatives to declining commercial honey bees. Daily work focused on gathering information on the ecological relationships between flowers and bee productivity. Gained experience in a biological lab, public outreach skills, and practice on data entry/analysis software and technique.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
The main goal of the project was to investigate the design of efficient air pollution regulations for vehicles in the United States. Teams from Berkeley, UPenn, and UCSD worked together to analyze the potential consequences of registration fees differing at the state level. My role consisted of using internet research, excel, and statistical software to construct a database of vehicle registration fees at the state, county, and city level across the United States. I then coordinated with the other teams to perform a legal and policy analysis of the registration fees and their impact on vehicular pollution levels.
Undergraduate Law Clerk
I pursued this summer position with the San Francisco District Attorney's office to gain some insight into the legal profession, and the day-to-day functions of attorneys in a fast-paced work environment. I intended to focus exclusively on environmental law cases, and pursued those opportunities whenever they were available. In periods where there were no active environmental law cases, I worked with the Domestic Violence Unit on high lethality cases. This office served as my home base throughout the summer position, as environmental cases were handled by numerous different offices. I performed some legal writing for my supervising ADA, as well as meticulously analyzing documents and audio recordings for potentially incriminating evidence. I organized trial binders and helped my ADA to be as prepared as possible for upcoming trials.

Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom is running on a platform of reducing child-poverty, increasing access to education, and protecting the environment. As an intern in his San Francisco campaign office, work includes engaging with local interest groups, organizing voter profiles, schedule planning, and the management of other tasks to ensure the campaign reaches as many people as possible. I specifically also work with the environmental policy team to improve the robustness of Mr. Newsom's strategies and goals. I was also promoted to the role of intern outreach moderator, a leadership role involving supervision of my peers and their work in the unprecedented text-messaging campaign seeking to reach millions of Californians and encourage their participation in upcoming elections.
