As an attorney, I’m used to fielding jokes about my profession. In spite of my sense of humor, it bothers me that attorneys are seen as dishonest, greedy, end-justifies-the-means types of people, especially when so much of legal work is about serving people. I am loyal--to my family, my employer, my community--following through on my commitments. I work hard to be a person who has integrity. Here’s what that looks like at work:I am committed to engaging with people from all walks of life, speaking about each with respect and rejoicing in and encouraging their successes rather than feeling threatened by them. I accept personal responsibility for my work. I share my honest assessment, accept responsibility for error, and give appropriate credit for success rather than say or do what may advance my interests.I work hard--often arriving early and staying late.I recognize the value of criticism regardless of its source. Thoughtful criticism with sincere appreciation engenders strong loyalty in me. I need minimal direction and intervention when given latitude to apply my best talents. It’s possible to eat soup with a fork, but hard work doesn’t have to be inefficient.I have fun at my job. When I’m myself and enjoy what I do, I do better work.
