Kindergarten teacher, responsible for 20 students (aged 3-5) for 8 hours per day. My role as English Homeroom Teacher is to devise and develop professional and structured lesson plans to cater for all levels of English in the classroom in a fun and exciting way. Teaching phonics, phenomes, word families, songs, sentences and vocabulary are some of the main teaching strategies used in the classroom. Linking these methods with a theme and using fun and relatable characters for the children each week is the key to a successful learning environment in my classroom. Some everyday activities include tracking students’ progress, enforcing classroom rules and supervising children both in the classroom and in the playground. A very important aspect of our class system is to foster relationships with the families and parents by encouraging an active learning process in the home and by conducting parent-teacher conferences biannually.

My duty as the Healthy Lifestyles Project Activity Co-ordinator and PT was to set up a program for the older population of the organisation. I was brought in to educate the staff, parents and other group homes of Hope Community Resources associated with the major issue of obesity in individuals who experience disabilities in the United States about the benefits of healthy eating and physical exercise. We set up daily exercise classes, provided nutritional advice for each and every individual, suggested healthier options in day to day life and visited their homes to build relationships. We used the local resources to build the individuals into the community where they would feel comfortable and safe to use the local gymnasium, running track, rock climbing wall etc. to partake in physical activities. The program started with 4 group homes consisting of 4 individuals (PWD) and 2-3 staff per home. The program expanded within 12 months to 9 group homes with a total of 28 individuals and 10 staff.

The duties as Camp Cara activity leader was to set up and devise session plans each day for 12 weeks to 20-30 young children between the age of 5-18 who experienced many different types of disability, both intellectually and physically. These session plans had various different elements but were made to be fun first and foremost and all had elements of physical activity throughout the day. Each week had a different theme and the goal was to get these kids having as much fun as possible in a warm and safe environment whilst getting them to work on their overall well being without fully realising they were partaking in beneficial exercise.
