  • Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory
    Laboratory Technician
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory May 1987 - Aug 1990
Cold Spring Harbor, New York, Us
While I was an undergraduate student in chemistry and biochemistry at Stonybrook University I would spend my summers at CSH on the groundskeeping crew with an eye to getting an opportunity to work in the laboratory and begin my path towards research. Ultimately, I became the lab technician for the summer courses at Jones Lab organized by Sue Hockfield, future president of MIT. While this was fantastic, my favorite memory is when Barbara McClintock came out of her house to let me know the garden hose was leaking and that I should replace the gasket. My second favorite memory was inviting James Watson to speak on the Human Genome project at Stony Brook University, sponsored by the Biochemistry Club we had just founded. He agreed and I hosted him to speak to a standing room only crowd! Amazing and terrifying memory.
