I established Thermal Kinetics Systems, originally “Bison Systems” in 1998. From then till 2008 Thermal Kinetics Systems provided process equipment solutions, operated a research and development program in cooperation with chemical engineering professor Vladimir Hlavacek and a team of graduate students. During this period, processes for biomass conversion and fuel ethanol production were explored, developed, and a series of important patents ultimately were issued by the US Patent Office and other countries. Thermal Kinetics Systems, LLC was redirected to operate as a patent holding company and technology developer after 2008 while Thermal Kinetics Engineering assumed all engineering and systems supply responsibility. Thermal Kinetics Engineering, PLLC was established in 2001. Areas of work include process plant consulting engineering and development of a systems integration and equipment supply business focused on evaporation, distillation and specialty processes. We configured energy recovery schemes for clients, evaluated fuel ethanol plants for optimization and improved efficiency, and directed design/development of the distillation/evaporation/dehydration units for nine fuel ethanol plants. Responsible for management of the engineering department, project management, major plants installation, process development, pilot plant and laboratory operations, and sales support. Restructured and upgraded the engineering department, hiring many key professionals, revamping the computing facilities, improving engineering document procedures, and implementing a strong project management discipline. Key projects included four caustic soda flake plants in China and Venezuela, a field installed caustic recovery evaporation facility for Milliken, and many smaller plants for evaporation of inorganics, organics, and fermentation materials.
Vicarb, SA of Grenoble, France approached C. J. Brown Engineering, P.C. to assist in design and management of a major HCl recovery plant from a waste phosgene off gas, and to develop the plan and strategy for start-up of a new equipment systems company. As a result, Karbate Systems was formed and I assumed management as a minority owner. In 1995 Vicarb sold its worldwide graphite equipment operations abandoning this new company, offering me a position with the new operation, however, I preferred to move on to other endeavors.
Managed the two companies in which total growth from 1987 to 1991 ran approximately 40% per year. Practiced engineering in heat transfer, mass transfer and chemical process design, facilities design and project management. I also consulted in design modifications of chemical and food processing systems for increased energy efficiency. During this period of time my companies provided energy recommendations and improvements for close to 2000 companies and organizations. C. J. Brown Energy, Inc. continues in operation under other ownership.
