My passion is student-centered education, and my mission is to help students develop strong critical thinking skills and fall in love with history. I’ve taught grades 6-12, ancient to modern. I’ve lived and worked overseas, instructing students of over a dozen different nationalities. I’ve differentiated my curriculum during my years at Milwaukee’s preeminently diverse Eastbrook Academy, and I’ve been professionally trained in the Cardinal Stritch MAT program and Center for Urban Teaching. Out of these experiences I’ve developed a few core principles that guide me as an educator. It begins with a healthy, respectful learning environment that allows students to fulfill their potential and take intellectual risks. The teacher abandons the role of policeman, and embraces the role of facilitator, striving to give ample room for democracy, student choice and responsibility. It continues with the fostering of critical thinking skills through quality student-led dialogue based on primary sources and essential questions. As a trained Socratic Seminar leader, it is my philosophical bedrock that students be continually given opportunities to share what they’re learning and processing.The educational process improves with thorough integration of technology into the learning process. Whether that be through Google Classroom, YouTube, Skype or students sites, creating a venue for continued independent learning and collaboration is non-negotiable.Finally, it rests in a love for the students and a passion for the subject. With years of experience as a camp counselor, motivational speaker and youth leader, I truly enjoy young people and getting to know them, and any student of mine will attest that I am passionate, almost to a fault, about history.
