My career has been in process development working at the interface between formulated products and active ingredients, and building on my educational foundations of fluid mechanics, transport and interfacial science. My interest and experience with the development of formulated products started when I joined Corporate R&D at Dow Chemical, leading me to Dow AgroSciences. There I was involved with developing controlled release formulations through various batch and continuous encapsulation processes to produce nano- and micro-particles. The projects I developed spanned from new discovery formulations through to line extensions. Process and product design was accompanied with mechanistic models to predict release profiles and drive development. My initial responsibilities in the small molecule process development organization at Lilly were the development of the cGMP process steps for multiple active pharmaceutical ingredients. Since then I have commercialized multiple products, and have been involved in numerous other regulatory filings and technology transfer activities for projects at various stages of clinical development. In 2009, I formed and then served as the technical lead for our Particle Design Laboratory. The group is responsible for the development and technology transfer of crystallization processes for all small molecule active pharmaceutical ingredients currently in development. Crystallization is used to ensure product purity as well as to control particle size necessary to meet the needs of the downstream operations (filtration and drying), and to ensure patient performance (bio-availability).A large part of my responsibilities have been to introduce and grow technologies new to our organization - crystal engineering, spray dried dispersions, process modeling, and continuous crystallization, isolation and drying. To grow those technologies I have been had to grow and develop teams. I enjoy mentoring and coaching technical teams and always am amazed by what they have delivered in the end. My mentorship experience extends beyond the groups and projects that I have lead. I routinely mentor others across the company, and outside of Lilly. My future interests are to continue on a technical leadership track, growing my sphere of influence while simultaneously increasing my depth of knowledge. I am interested in organizations that value technical depth and have a strong interest in the utilization of modeling with clearly designed experiments to drive product development. International opportunities are of great interest as well.
