During my 12 years in the RAF Regiment, I saw active service in both Iraq and Afghanistan.From early on in my military career, I specialised in the 81mm Mortar which purpose is to support friendly forces on the ground. I later went on to become an instructor in this weapon system, which also included calling in and directing the mortar fire.I worked my way through the junior ranks to a junior management level where I was in command of a section which usually consisted of 8 men. Once I reached this level I then furthered my career by gaining several Instructor qualifications. these ranged from Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Operational Instructor (CBRNOI), to Close Quarter Battle Instructor.On Operations I have been exposed to the full spectrum of roles such as the Team Medic, Section 2I/C, Section Commander, Vehicle Commander and Indirect Fires Specialist/Advisor to my hierarchy. During my final 2 years, I was posted to the Wing Headquarters where I was responsible for the Training of all Wing Personnel. The Wing was predominantly made up of Senior Officers which required close liaison with them in order to meet the required Training Objectives and tailored to the relevant individuals needs, as set out in our Training Directive. This often meant that I had extremely short time scales to generate the necessary stores, equipment and Training Areas needed to get everyone to the correct standard required so Personnel could readily and rapidly deploy on Operations at very short notice.
