During my 6th month term as an Americorps volunteer, I worked on a trail crew to improve public lands in Texas. We constructed over ten rock steps, several switchbacks and retaining walls, and chainsawed an entirely new trail at Bastrop State Park.Responsibilities and skills included:-Communication: Many projects involved working with park rangers and translating ideas into finished trail features that will withstand the harsh climate.-Time management: Every assignment required the ability to accomplish projects within a strict deadline/time frame.-Teamwork and group management: We worked in a crew of six, camping for ten days at a time on the trail, coordinating preparation, work time, meals, and site work, and clean-up.-Physical labor: The crew coordinated repairs of existing trails, construction of retaining walls, involving over ten courses of rocks, etc.
