I completed a six-month secondment to the Tax Disputes & Investigations team. Highlights of my Tax Disputes seat include: ● Assisting clients with direct and indirect tax cases heard in the FTT, UTT, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court. ● Advising clients subject to COP 9 HMRC investigations.● Drafting a wide range of documentation including outline disclosure, disclosure reports and witness statements.● Engaging in ADR/Mediation on behalf of clients. Notable matters that I worked on include:● A Group Litigation Order representing around 300 claimants. Related parties include Royal Mail and their tax status/obligations as an emanation of the state. ● Representing a group of over 150 television and radio presenters in relation to NI and PAYE contributions made to a corporation despite their ‘self-employed’ status.● Acting for the financial arm of a luxury car manufacturer as to the application of VAT on the supply of certain products as a supply of goods or a supply of services.● An appeal to the Supreme Court concerning the deduction of input VAT.
