This was an amazing apprenticeship in municipal public practice where multiple political forces come to bear on legal questions. I researched and prepared issue memoranda to support civil litigation motions and legal opinions for city council policy. I also had the opportunity to see how disputes can be resolved through a political, rather than legal, process.

This was my first law school internship and I loved every minute of it. From day one I negotiated plea bargains with misdemeanor and traffic defendants at arraignment. By my 3L year I was in charge of the minor-in-possession of alcohol (“MIP”) docket, and I prepared and tried 2 MIP cases before a magistrate judge, both convictions. I researched and wrote successful appellate responses to defendants’ appeals of conviction and State’s appeals of motions rulings; and researched and wrote issue memos concerning probation, sentencing, restitution, and appropriate charge filing.

I wanted hands-on experience in California courts, so I spent the entire summer in front of a superior court judge. Each week I was responsible for several motions, most of which were motions to dismiss, motions to suppress evidence, and motions to revoke probation. Every motion included research of the police report and charge, officer interviews, and witness examinations. I tried a public intoxication trial, including an expert witness examination, which resulted in a conviction. I also helped senior attorneys with trial exhibits, and with research and writing on appeal motions.

After moving to Denver, I was fortunate to work with great people at one of the biggest firms in the state. I prepared and reviewed loan documents, created computer filing systems, and catalogued all loan documents and transaction due diligence for complex commercial real estate transactions.

This was my first paid legal job, and I was quickly introduced to the myriad rigors of high-profile litigation. I worked on multiple trial preparation teams, often reporting directly to the attorneys on the case. I indexed pre-trial document productions, correspondence, and filings. As the cases neared trial, I coordinated between attorneys, IT, and litigation support departments and created online document indexes for use at trial. A few of the cases actually made it to trial, where I also provided litigation support: I organized trial war room and catalogued trial testimony transcripts and trial exhibits.

I began at Wall Street Direct, an online financial services company, as an Office Manager, then served as Director of Content for the company web site, and moved up quickly to Director of Operations. MicroAngels.org was a non-profit specializing in direct public offerings for start-up companies. I planned and organized chapter meetings and entrepreneur workshops, creating marketing and event content and managing location hosting and sponsor partnerships.
