Azores Corp builds capital equipment (lithography tools) used in the manufacture of flat panel displays and other large area planer devices. Responsible for company's software product development, maintenance and support. Manage a team of 10 software and electrical engineers, most of whom are senior level. Due to the small size of the organization relative to the sophistication of the product, I also play an active role in software maintenance and development. I have traveled throughout Asia in support of the company's products.The software environment is diverse consisting of a mixture of real-time control code written in C and C++, and Windows applications that use the .NET framework for operator interfaces. The software runs on 4 computing platforms communicating via TCP/IP. In addition to processors hosting Azores developed code, there are several third party subsystems (e.g. vision system, robotic handlers, etc.) that interact via ASCII command interfaces. The coordination of all activity within the stepper is directed by a large real-time C program.

Responsible for development of controller board hardware and firmware used by the permanent magnet motor drive system of Navy DD(X) program. A principal architect of a successful n-tier distributed motor control system. This distributed control system synchronizes the activity of over 100 control processors.Lead software engineer on the master controller application of the motor control system. This multi-tasking VxWorks application written in C++ runs on a PowerPC single board computer. Architected the embedded software design in UML using Rational Rose Realtime Development Studio. Coded the first generation application and refactored a second generation design. Wrote a custom VxWorks driver to interface to a proprietary communications interface.Successfully managed the outsourced design of two DSP-based motor control boards. These boards operated in a medium voltage power converter (2000 V bus) in a high EMI environment as part of the permanent magnet motor drive. Coordinated the design activities of electrical engineers involved in digital, analog and high-power design. Performed most of the FPGA firmware design.

Led the development effort and coded most of the firmware on two DSP motor control boards. The firmware performs the motor commutation and implements the hardware safety features for the high-power inverters used to rotate a PM motor. The firmware is coded in both VHDL and Verilog and is implemented in Xilinx FPGAs using the ISE Foundation tool set.

with a venture-backed fabless semiconductor startup company. Developed diagnostic tests and applications in C/C++ for a real-time embedded system to evaluate System-On-Chip (SOC) networking ASICs. Setup the system software (VxWorks on PowerPC board) and the software development environment (Tornado and VisionICE) for the router test platform built to verify the ASICs. Developed an event-driven shell application using STL to facilitate local and remote interaction with diagnostic and driver routines. Ported all the code to run on Linux and NetBSD in order to ensure platform neutrality of the diagnostic and driver code.Diagnostics verified behavior of registers, memory, interrupts, and the data and control paths for each ASIC. System level diagnostics verified data paths between chips using inject and capture. Wrote a database application to read the device registers and display information down to the bit fields. Worked closely with board and FPGA programmers to successfully bring-up the custom multi-card test router.

Developed C/C++ diagnostic software for a Pentium-based system management card running Linux. Contributed code to a hardware abstraction layer that utilized polymorphism to maximize code re-use and flexibility. Ported code from a PowerPC-based management card running VxWorks. Interacted closely with hardware engineers and participated in design reviews of boards. Used a hardware-assisted debugger (CodeTap) during development.

Member of a team that defined the high-level architecture for the next generation ATE control software. OO analysis and design generated artifacts in UML using Rational Rose. Application was C/C++ and Visual Basic (VB) on Windows NT that utilized Microsoft's Component Object Model (COM). Directed junior engineers in the design and development of their code for this large project. Developed competency in creating software components using COM and the ActiveX Template Library (ATL). Sustaining engineer for a custom incremental compiler, linker, and debugger for the current ATE system running on Solaris. The compiler and debugger were distributed across a host and an embedded target. Required extensive UNIX system programming, threading, and IPC knowledge.

Cleared for top-secret projects. Responsible for design and coding of two Computer Software Components (CSCs) for a real-time DSP system. The CSCs contained system control logic, utilized UNIX system calls and were multi-threaded. On another project, corrected the operation of an embedded steering unit for a naval IFF system to remove spurious signals that randomly affected its positioning. New code was written and the RTOS scheduling was modified. Trouble shooting required the use of a logic analyzer to isolate the problem.

Developed optical, electronic and barrier coatings using vacuum deposition technologies. Research focused on the sputtering of metals, oxides and polymers. Scientist on a team that developed award-winning technologies of vacuum evaporation and extrusion of polymers that are resulting in novel, high-value products such as thin-film lithium polymer batteries. Supervised support staff that produced thin-film coatings.
