My main task was to report and oversee reporting on government, macroeconomics, policy making in general and some corporate shenanigans in a G7 country at a time of immense Europe-wide strain. I also helped guide a team of reporters covering local companies. Funnily, I moved to Rome expecting to witness Silvio Berlusconi's exit from the political stage, but that ended up being completely overshadowed by the euro drama. At any rate, my aim was to provide fresh and new facts and insights into the Italian story, which if one cares to go beyond cliches is not all dismal.

I started out covering Fiat, Italian luxury goods and private-equity news but quickly shifted into a job co-piloting coverage of macroeconomic trends and central banking from bureaux around Europe. Although technically an editor I always did a lot of reporting. I was fortunate to have this gig as I covered Erdogan's political ascent in Turkey and the new EU member states in the east as well as having a perch allowing me to identify faultlines that shot up to prominence when the euro-zone debt crisis erupted.

I wrote the EIU's analytical reports on Italy. Apart from having Robert O'Daly as a truly superb editor, this was a fun job as it required thinking through Italian politics from a much longer-term time frame than is typically done at newspapers. Sadly I had to drop this collaboration at the request of Dow Jones, on the grounds that the EIU is part of a rival publishing company.

Milan Area, Italy

I co-founded and then ran a four-page zoned insert for Italy of the International Herald Tribune. This was wildly fun though absurdly gruelling and involved training reporters - many of whom went on to professional success - and mustering a roster of outside commentators and somehow riding herd so that we met the printing deadline six days a week.
