Was pilot of a Cessna 172 at Southern California Logistics Airport in Victorville, California on its runway 17 - kept the plane's nose wheel from touching the asphalt surface (a "wheelie") for a distance of 14,319 feet (4.364 kilometers). Received national media coverage (USA Today, Popular Mechanics, AOPA, and more).

Sharing the world of aviation with clients, coaching and instructing them in the early phases of their aviation careers, in addition to conducting checkouts in aircraft. Certified for single and multi-engine airplane instruction (CFI/MEI), as well as instrument ratings (CFII).

An Air Safety Investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigates the causes of aircraft accidents. NTSB investigators often work as a team with other government agencies and emergency personnel during the course of an investigation. An Air Safety Investigator determines the facts of a case and draws conclusions based on the evidence. When the investigation is completed, the NTSB investigator is responsible for writing detailed reports of the findings. The Air Safety Investigator often makes safety recommendations based on his or her conclusions from the investigation. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) often acts on these recommendations and makes new or improved rules and regulations.

In ALPA's Communication department, am responsible for researching and writing technical aviation news, advocacy pieces, and speeches that advance the Association’s strategic goals and promote ALPA’s value to its members. Researches and writes all technical aviation news and most technical feature material, while keeping well-informed on technical developments throughout the aviation industry, monitoring the activities of the FAA, NTSB, TC, TSA, TSB, and other government agencies on issues relevant to the membership, as well as ALPA's Air Safety Organization. Performs print photography of events and light social media duties.

Owns and operates website on “aviation archaeology,” publishing self-written stories of ill-fated aircraft around the world. Conducts subject expert interviews & research, documents historic crash sites, and proof-reads content. Handles accounting, advertising, paid link placement & merchandise sales, inventory, and shipping. Operates social media presence, and interacts with users regularly with relevant, timely content, heads consulting services for aviation business startups and projects, and writes compelling aerospace articles on a freelance basis.

After moving to the other side of the United States for "the day job", I continue to share the world of aviation with clients, coaching and instructing them in the early phases of their aviation careers, in addition to conducting checkouts in high performance / complex aircraft. The school closed in August of 2018.

Expanded my instructional services at OAK to this small equity-share club, to take advantage of their reasonable rental rates, pride of ownership, strong sense of community, and overall better attitude towards aviation and fellow pilots than other places on the field.

Writer for the production of AOPA Foundation programs (under a division of that body, the Air Safety Institute), such as interactive online courses, live safety seminars, webinars, videos, and print publications. Topics include safety, airports, image of general aviation, and growing the pilot population. First major project - the online Flight Instructor Refresher Course (eFIRC) - was completed in early July of 2013.

Opened the doors to aviation to numerous first-time pilots by providing flight and ground instruction at Metropolitan Oakland International Airport, and helped clients achieve their goals in aviation. Ran school's dispatch desk, flew maintenance ferry and test flights, and was often that "first smile" a potential student was greeted with as they entered the world of GA flying. Assumed part-time status in September of 2012 due to accepting full-time employment as a staff writer for the Air Safety Institute.

Taught over 60 freshmen the basics of aerodynamics, aerospace weather, federal aviation regulations, airport design, aviation mechanics, and more over the school year. Personally built a curriculum, with no guidance from the senior school staff, into an award-winning STEM education program during a single school year. Frequently subbed for the math and maintenance instructors. The Oakland Unified School District (home of "Ebonics") did not renew the school's charter, and it closed in the summer of 2011.

Government-contracted flight instructor, introducing active-duty, reservist, and retired military and veterans to the notion of flying for themselves. The club's new fleet of Piper Archers (Avidyne-equipped) were great - and extremely affordable - primary trainers, and their Cessna T-41C was a true joy to pilot. Parted ways with Travis Aero cordially after flying operations at OAK picked up, but still frequently visit the club and other instructors there on fuel-ups at O88.

A very, VERY, part time job (seasonal), would work as event staff for Plan-It Interactive, a large provider of interactive games for corporate and private events. Handled everything from mini "keg racers" to 30-foot slides, with the occasional "Black Jack" dealing worked in to liven the pace. Long hours, respectable pay, and a great company to work for and with.

College job - close to home, and had somewhat flexible hours. Cashiering, ran the customer service desk (handling returns mostly), and performing the miscellaneous duties found in a retail home improvement establishment, all with a positive and cheerful attitude. Learned a LOT about presentation, customer service, and the dynamics of business that I use today as a flight instructor and writer.

Responsible for the safe and productive use of the camp's waterfront area, run by the Mount Diablo Silverado Council. Supervised hundreds of swim tests handled by a staff of 5, as well as training over a dozen Scouts and adults in life saving techniques, resulting in their lifeguard certifications, and Safe Swim Defense and Safety Aloft program training weekly. An awesome experience all around.

Retail GPS, software, climbing, camping equipment sales. Was product expert on some of the first consumer-grade handheld GPS units from Garmin, and on National Geographic's "TOPO!" software. A great (and fun) work experience, especially in light of my time as a Boy Scout. Took a hiatus to volunteer for the summer at my local Scout Camp as the aquatics director / head lifeguard, and - in my absence - the staff was downsized, me included.

Entry-level military duties as part of the Air Force Cadet Wing. Standing watches at the "CQ" desk (at both the squadron and group level), academic assignments, and flying training gliders. Additional duties including managing our squadron's intramural handball team, handling information management issues for over 60 cadets, and training underclassmen in military knowledge, customs, and courtesies.
