About Christopher Gallen

The study of philosophy (UofF) led to an interest in how the brain gives rise to consciousness (the mind-body problem). This led to the Medical Scientist Training Program (MD Ph.D., Emory) to become a scientist (biochemist) and physician and training in the two medical disciplines involved with the mind-body problem, Psychiatry (Stanford) and Neurology (UCSD). This supported an academic career studying human brain functional imaging, especially human cerebral plasticity and the human 40 Hz current, great integrative mechanisms underlying much brain functioning. Subsequently, I moved to a life-long focus on the development of therapeutics, initially through the CRO industry (Quintiles, Premier Research Worldwide) then big pharma (Pharmacia, Wyeth), and eventually biotech (Neuromed, CombinatoRx/Zalicus and now SKBP/SKLSI, WEX and Treos Bio Ltd with a BOD Role at Highland Therapeutics). During the course of this experience, I learned how to conduct industrial-scale clinical and discovery research, start companies (supported IPO of BTi, led IPO of Premier Research Worldwide, took Neuromed public by merger into CombinatoRx (now Zalicus)), how to build small companies (Premier, Neuromed, CombinatoRx/Zalicus, SKBP/SKLSI) and now WEX), and how to re-engineer large companies (Pharmacia and Wyeth) and an international biotech (SKBP). Along the way, I concluded that our wrongly-maligned industry serves a great moral purpose - we save lives, extend lives, and make lives better. My goal is to lead people to create and commercialize best-in-class innovative pharmaceuticals using scientific strategic insight, bringing out the best performance in the people and a strong understanding of how to use processes integrated with appropriate technologies to produce superior performance. My ultimate goal is to create a company with the right values, culture, scientific attitude, abilities to "get it right" and "get it done," and an R&D strategy to become the model for next-generation Pharma success.Specialties: All aspects of Neurotherapeutics and Pain development - Chemistry, preclinical, clinical development, registration activities globally, and commercialization. Broadly experienced in several additional therapeutic areas, including oncology, orphan diseases, immunological therapeuticsClinical development across specialtiesCorporate leadership - development of strategy and goals, recruitment of the right people, creation of best-in-class processes based on the proper use of technology, inspiration, deals, interacting with the public markets and with investors/owners

Listed skills include Drug Development, Biotechnology, Clinical Trials, Pharmaceutical Industry, and 46 others.

Along the way SKBP has developed an innovative way of doing its science, an excellent pipeline (mostly CNS), an innovative manufacturing capacity servicing many pharma and has laid a foundation to progress to the next level. My role was to finish the maturation of SK as a development organization, to progress it towards becoming ready to become a functional public company, and to progress it over time to become a CNS specialty pharma centered in the US with global partnering of compounds we do not commercialize ourselves. All goals accomplished by creating an entity that over time has the potential to become the first great CNS Biopharma of the 21st century, an organization that develops and commercializes great drugs generating great value, an organization with a culture and environment that brings out the best capacities in its' people, an organization that embodies the values of intelligence, integrity, innovation, initiative and execution I think critical to being a great Pharma, an organization that becomes the kind of place that The Scripps Research Institute was for me - a place where you do the best work of your life, and most importantly, a place that develops medicines that matter, medicines that change the lives of millions of people for the better.
