I went into Emergency Medicine to work hard, help people from day 1 to 101 years of life with a multitude of problems and after 25 years I still fully enjoy my career. I have had the opportunities to work in 4 different states, in urban and rural settings, academic and private institutions. I have been staffing and help start and run several freestanding Emergency Centers for the past 14 years, two of which have become acute care hospitals. I attended medical school at UTMB in Galveston where the new pilot program had us learning to interview and connect with patients on day 1 of our training. I trained at the University of Louisville trauma center and the Kosair Pediatric ER where the see 1, do 1 and teach 1 mantra set me up for success no matter where I could practice. I am proudly board certified in Emergency Medicine by ABEM. I have found that sitting down to listen for a few minutes can help a patient more than any test. Of course, in the ER setting, time is of the essence and sometimes, we treat while we listen. Saving a life in the golden hour is just a small percentage of most of our shifts, but making an impact in my clients' lives by caring for them daily in the FSEC world is where I have made the most difference.
