After spending time in the QA team in Commscope Belfast I then moved to the development team to work on the Python based back-end of the domain manager project, a network hardware management and monitoring system. In this role, I was involved in various tasks that required me to write new APIs and efficiently manage the existing APIs within the system. This involved validating the payloads the user provided on multiple layers, first off checking the correct data types were provided and then logic layer checks that this data matched what was allowed by hardware specifications, the complexity of the data necessitated a meticulous approach. Once this data was accepted by the system it was then needed to be communicated on to the device which required some manipulation of a hardware adapter layer, which involved transforming what could be a relatively concise payload, consisting of a few variables, into an extensive set of configuration commands tailored specifically for the hardware in question. Given the potential ramifications of sending incompatible commands to the hardware, we relied heavily on pytest to rigorously unit test the logic and adapter layer code, so when writing a new feature unit tests were just as much a part of my day to day work as production code. The back-end API code was also responsible for controlling the interactions with the Arango database layer all while seamlessly operating within a Kubernetes orchestration system. Moreover, as part of my responsibilities, I actively took on the role of mentoring junior team members, including students, guiding them in their professional growth and imparting valuable knowledge and expertise.

When I first joined Arris/CommScope I worked on the Titanium conditional access system. My duties included installing a customer flavour of CentOS to various servers and then declaring the individual roles of those servers within the overall system, there was some manual functional testing required due to the use of set top boxes and devices like tablets or MAC OS so end to end testing was purely a manual activity, however I did also spend time writing automated tests to validate interactions within the system by making use of robot framework, we made use of Jenkins to run a full suite of tests as and when required and I wrote my own script to take the results of a run from Robot and automatically update Jira with the test results.A few years our team embarked on the development of the Domain Manager product, which is used to control and monitor network hardware devices within a telecommunications network. While working on the Domain Manager it was decided that the focus of the testing should be on the API layer so I spent the vast majority of my time developing API tests written in Python, making use of PyTest. Seizing this opportunity to immerse myself in an automation-centric role, I wholeheartedly embraced the challenge. This entailed assuming the responsibility for crafting a substantial number of new test cases, collaborating closely with the head of the development team to determine work priorities, diligently maintaining the existing test suite, and assuming complete ownership over the deployment and execution of nightly test runs. Consequently, I naturally evolved into the go-to person for any inquiries or requests for additional insights into the automated framework. While I spearheaded the advancement of the test framework, I also extended my expertise to guide a junior team member and a placement student, on a daily basis, they sought my direction to effectively manage their workload and contribute to the overall success of the project.

Sole Software QA engineer for the Imaris image analysis software application developed by subsidiary company Bitplane based in Zurich, Switzerland. As the only software test engineer assigned to this application my role encompassed all aspects of testing required for Imaris, which included the following : ◦ Authoring and maintenance of automation test cases in C# using the Ranorex test automation framework ◦ Authoring and executing of manual test cases, this included a sanity set, new tests based upon recently delivered requirements and a regression test suite ◦ Verification of new bugs as reported by customers, sales and support teams ◦ First port of call for Support when they have an issue which required input from the development team - mostly troubleshooting customer problems. ◦ Administration of the bugzilla bug tracking server ◦ Exploratory manual testing ◦ Performance testing of Imaris based upon alterations to hardware setup with a particular focus on graphics and rendering performance.
