Senior Analyst
Senior Energy Engineer
Distributed critical technical advice to customers & team members concerning energy consumption patterns; including reduction measures, that resulted in an eight-fold increase in MelRok’s staff (four to 35); assisted in escalating company net worth from $350k to $5 million in two years. Managed MelRok’s two largest clients covering 150+ structures (residences, office buildings, wet/dry laboratories, hospital facilities, central utility plants, & electrical substations) & raising MelRok revenue by $750k in a single project. Oversaw the installation, commissioning, & precise operation of over 175 advanced electrical metering platforms across four simultaneous projects. Partnered with public/private entities to test automated demand response (ADR) technologies. Collected & analyzed energy use & cost data to further refine sites for potential ADR testing. Improved MelRok’s core competency by designing, developing, testing, and implementing a complex and comprehensive energy analytics tool (EnergiScore) that was instrumental in improving building energy analysis cycle time by 50%. Software-based analytics toolset positioned both customer support and engineering teams to better serve existing customers, as well as improve the overall user experience. Expanded on whole-building and sub-system (HVAC, Plug, Lighting) energy analysis, providing supplementary actionable information for each customer. These automated reports enabled clients to rapidly analyze large sets of data, increasing the collected energy use data’s overall value. Consistently delivered in all areas where needed: business use case and data analysis, project management, and technical sales support. Often stretched in multiple directions, always maintained a professional, approachable and positive attitude. Maintained significant responsibilities with existing roles and advanced knowledge into various specialties that further enhanced MelRok’s core energy data collection and analysis processes.
Graduate Student Researcher
Contributed engineering analysis support to the National Fuel Cell Research Center (NFCRC) during beta testing of a novel permeable exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell. Tasked with analyzing in-situ operating data and developing a computer model of a shell and tube type heat exchanger. Computer model was utilized to analyze and optimize steady-state operating conditions while under part and full load conditions. Rapidly engaged in and added value to building efficiency studies at the Advanced Power and Energy Program (APEP) by collecting and normalizing three years of hourly energy use data from over 100 federal, state, and local buildings in California. Additionally, performed four ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers) level 2 energy audits on four separate sites on or adjacent to the University of California Irvine campus. Primary research question posed was to evaluate the efficacy of “high efficiency” (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design [LEED] certified) buildings compared to a control group. Two sets of identical buildings were selected that had standard and “high efficiency” ratings. Supervised the installation and commissioning of high resolution electrical monitoring equipment at the four buildings, and the collection of data over the course of one year. Collected monthly natural gas (NG) data from the utility company, as well as building occupancy and operating information during on-site visits. The compiled electrical, NG, & operating data provided valuable insight to electricity consumption profiles of all four locations, which led to reducing high electrical demand events during utility defined “peak time” hours. These data were then disseminated into four separate projects for evaluation, which contributed to the continued funding of APEP from the Department of Energy (DOE) totaling nearly $1.6 million. Submitted thesis (over 200 pages) accepted by the UC Irvine Henry Samueli School of Engineering.
Waterways Safety, Assistant Branch Chief
Heavily relied upon for program knowledge as Waterways Safety Assistant Branch Chief, superb coordination of a team of five produced optimum results including overseeing congressional inquiry research, submitting broadcast notice to mariners (NtM), processing marine event permits, & drafting regulations for Coast Guard (CG) rule making process. Dedicated & effective management of safety & security concerns affecting navigable waters of militarily and economically strategic port (San Francisco Bay) through promulgation of Captain of the Port (COTP) safety/security zones & special local requirements; monitored/drafted permits for marine events, construction, dredging, anchor waivers, & repairs to billion dollar levee infrastructure to mitigate impacts on multi-use waterways. Assured mariner safety through dozens of timely broadcast NtMs. Performed role of broker between wide variety of waterway users to reduce navigation hazards and ensure safe commercial/public transit. Built an effective network of event sponsors, vessel pilots, and law enforcement (LE) partners to notify waterway users of hazards from high impact marine construction projects and events including sailing regattas, fireworks displays, competitive swims, powerboat races, transbay cable routing and bay bridge construction; dozens of successful marine events/projects over 10 months of tenure with no casualties. Effectively drafted and issued eight safety zone and 30+ marine event permits with remarkable communication and coordination among CG, industry, and public. Diligently studied regulations to ensure all documents from office were drafted, routed, implemented, monitored, and tracked properly. Displayed superior preparation skills, exemplary attitude, and effective teamwork; contributing to successfully meeting timelines and budgets as morale officer; planned eight highly-attended morale events lauded by all levels of command and ensured the recognition of the ten-member morale coordination team.
Engineering Officer In Training
Served as the United States Coast Guard Cutter (USCGC) Hamilton’s damage control assistant (DCA), damage control (DC) division officer, and qualified in all available engineering watch stations while completing the Engineering Officer in Training Personnel Qualification Standard (EOIT PQS). Hamilton was a 378-foot-long High Endurance Cutter with 160 crew performing numerous missions including search and rescue, migrant interdiction, maritime law enforcement, environmental protection and response, and national defense. DCA duties encompassed training all shipboard personnel in DC topics and directing all actions required to maintain shipboard watertight integrity, stability, mobility and maneuverability. During general emergency events (fire or flooding), responsible for evaluating potential hazards, and taking necessary actions to minimize impact to the ship and crew. Impact minimization consisted of confinement and extinguishment of fires, dewatering operations, and ventilation control. Significantly improved the DC PQS program by creating structured classes which reduced qualification times from 30+ to 15 days and increased the shipboard qualification rate from 70% to 93% over a three-month period. DC division officer duties included supervising seven personnel, managing a budget of $50k per year, and proposing, planning, scheduling and executing DC related maintenance projects. Thorough assessment and detailed reporting, which identified several degraded areas, resulted in an unscheduled emergency dry-docking and $750k overhaul of deteriorated areas; ensuring crew safety and ship survivability and longevity. Adeptly managed multiple civilian contractors and 30 enlisted personnel during a $48k dockside overhaul project targeting the repair or replacement of watertight fittings. Enabled smooth coordination between shipboard work and contractor requests; ensuring all work was completed on time and to specification; while enforcing all necessary safety practices.
