About Christopher Heale, Ph.D, Mba
I am currently a research professor in the field of atmospheric dynamics and chemistry, high performance computing and modeling. I predominately use nonlinear, 3D atmospheric simulations in highly parallel computing environments along with diverse atmospheric datasets to study and explain atmospheric phenomena, particularly atmospheric wave structures. Common techniques employed are finite difference/volume methods, signal processing, data assimilation and mining, in-depth data analytics, visualization and parallel computing. To do so, I have used Fortran, Matlab, R, and Python. To date, I have published 20+ academic papers and given 30+ talks, and convened sessions, at numerous national and international conferences. I have been a reviewer for several prominent journals and agencies including the National Science Foundation (NSF), NASA, and the National Environmental Research Council (NERC) and have mentored both masters and Ph.D students. I have also taken on the role of project manager for a large DARPA project to assess the feasibility of using the atmosphere as a sensor. I got my undergraduate and master degrees in Astrophysics and spent a year researching colliding galactic systems at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. I then went on to complete my Ph.D in Engineering Physics at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. In-between the Masters and PhD degrees, I worked in the UK defense industry developing and improving production line processes for military grade Infrared imaging systems, specifically Cadmium Mercury Telluride (CMT) semiconductor arrays. I also completed a Masters of Business Administration with a specialization in finance and studied Data Science at the same time. As a capstone project, I served as a team lead on a consulting project for Space Florida in which we performed a vertical launch revenue stream analysis for the commercialization of unused launch complexes at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station/Kennedy Space Center. I have a strong interest in data-driven decision making and machine learning for business and finance applications. I believe there is a big gulf in understanding between the technical and business personnel. I hope to bridge that gap by combining my science background with a business degree. On the data analytics side, I have completed an online micromasters in Data Science from MIT and performed data analytics projects including "House price preditions for Flager county using MLS data" and "Sentiment analysis for Germanwings customer review data".

Research Assistant Professor
Current
Research Associate
CurrentPerforming high-resolution Computational Fluid Dynamics modeling of wave processes and interactions in the upper atmosphere. Projects often work closely with remote sensing and instrument data from ground and space based platforms to explain and constrain atmospheric wave phenomena and their impact upon the momentum, and energy budget of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere.
Ph.D Engineering Physics
My thesis was entitled "The long-range propagation, dissipation and interaction of gravity waves in the Mesosphere and Lower Thermosphere". My research involved developing and implementing numerical models of the Earth's atmosphere in Fortran and Matlab. The resulting numerical model was used to investigate the nature of atmospheric wave structures and their influence on the upper regions of the atmosphere. In-depth analysis was carried out predominately using signal and image processing, spectral analysis, and time series analysis techniques. The Ph.D resulted in three peer-reviewed publications in the Journal of Geophysical Research, and numerous presentations at the American Geophysical Union, and CEDAR conferences.
Device Engineer
This position involved developing and producing high-end military grade Infrared imaging systems for handheld, airbourne, and space bourne sensing systems. The company developed Cadmium Mercury Telluride (CMT) IR arrays from the growth of the crystal, to the final product. During my tenure, I used my knowledge of semiconductor physics and statistical control techniques (Six Sigma etc) to improve, optimize, and troubleshoot production line models, while working on R&D projects and developing new products.
Researcher
As a research scientist, I worked as part of a team on the Spitzer Interacting Galaxy Study (SIGs) which aimed to further understand the evolution of colliding and merging galactic systems. I worked with large infrared spectral and image datasets obtained from NASA's Spitzer Space telescope. Analysis was carried out to produce indicators of enhanced star formation regions and black hole activity.
