About Christopher Hilton

Experienced archivist with a passion for making archives usable: for inspiring people to consult them, joining the user to the records they need, and transmitting this enthusiasm to my team. I'm equally happy doing the hard graft to make two computer systems interact, or standing in front of a group of primary school children enthusing about our material.

Christopher Hilton Work Experience Details
  • Britten Pears Arts
    Head Of Archive And Library
Britten Pears Arts Sep 2017 - Present
    Aldeburgh, Suffolk
Leading on the development of the archive and library holdings at The Red House, former home of Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears, and of the information resources that make them accessible; meshing them into our offering to the public and ensuring that they form part of a unified resource in parallel with the heritage house and its object and artwork collections, and with our outreach activities.I'm also Chair of the User Group for Axiell's CALM archive software system, since 2007.
  • Wellcome Trust
    Data Architect
    Wellcome Trust Dec 2016 - Aug 2017
    London, United Kingdom
I worked as part of a cross-functional product team within the Wellcome Library Digital Engagement department to support developers in their understanding of Library data: constructing the data model to lie below a new discovery layer and bring together all the Library's various catalogues for different types of material in one unified whole, and writing code (in .ttl and JSON) describing this model that could be used by the developers building the new web service.
  • Wellcome Trust
Senior Archivist (Digital Discovery And Delivery)
    Wellcome Trust Aug 1993 - Dec 2016
    London, United Kingdom
The full range of archival activities, from surveying and acquiring records through cataloguing to publicity and outreach. I had particular responsibility for systems issues: setting up and running the Library's CALM database in conjunction with our systems department, leading on the conversion of catalogues to digital form, and looking at how the CALM database could be made to interact with the Library's MARC catalogue for published material, with our digital preservation and digitisation activities (centred on our Preservica system), and with new developments in making catalogues visible. I did also get my head out from under the bonnet of the databases and give talks, write or engage in other outreach activities; as a former local government employee, anything that involved boundaries or sewers was grist to my mill. My overarching drive was always to widen access to our materials as much as I could: in pursuit of this end, I had, for example, a long-running campaign to publicise the value of medical records to family historians. In addition to face-to-face talking, I did a lot of reader outreach through the Wellcome Library blog (http://blog.wellcomelibrary.org/author/chilton/) and wrote for a wide variety of other outlets.
  • London Metropolitan Archives
    Archivist
    London Metropolitan Archives 1989 - 1993
    London, United Kingdom
At that time, the Greater London Record Office: working in the Modern Records section, dealing with the aftermath of GLC abolition. This involved surveys and acquisition of material, appraisal and cataloguing, and distribution of material still considered current to the appropriate successor authorities. In addition, as Accommodation Officer, I was responsible for finding and exploiting space, and moving records out of County Hall as it wound down, all involving liaison with facilities departments, removal contractors, security, etc. During this period I was also taking the Society of Archivists' in-service diploma, completing this in late 1991.
  • Department Of Education, Science And Training
    Heo(D)
Department Of Education, Science And Training 1988 - 1989
    London, United Kingdom
Handling ministerial correspondence and briefings up to and after the passage of the Education Reform Act 1988; and, in hindsight, gaining an insight into how records are generated and kept by an active organisation.
  • London Metropolitan Archives
    Archive Assistant
    London Metropolitan Archives 1987 - 1988
At that time, the Greater London Record Office: working in the Modern Records section, dealing with the aftermath of GLC abolition. Basic cataloguing and administrative work, getting a taste for life in a record office.
