Phd Candidate In Psychology - Experimental NeuroscienceDalhousie University Apr 2019 - PresentAlthough AIs are smart, they are not going to replace humans (at least not yet). Although many people envision (or worry) about a world where AI replaces humans in a wide range of tasks and jobs, it is more likely that AIs will work alongside us in human-AI teams. What’s critical to understand in this relationship is that the AI serves as a tool, not as a catch-all measure to make sure that humans don’t make mistakes (AIs are susceptible to mistakes as well!). The benefit of human-AI teams is that each actor makes different kinds of mistakes, meaning that things that slip through one system can be caught by the other. Often, it is too easy for people to assume that if they have an AI they can just assign the entire task to it, but this would lead to worse performance than combined efforts. The same is true if the person never trusts the AIs opinion. Understanding how to rely on AI will be critical for anyone who plans to work with one in the future, whether it be as complex as air traffic control, or as simple as self-driving cars. The target for my research is mainly in specialized practical employment such as marine, air control, factory automation, or military applications. Currently, it’s relatively restricted to these areas because of the nature of the technology, with large organizations fronting the cost of exploring AI technology. However, given the progression of technology there will likely be a greater number of general public individuals that will benefit from my research. My focus is primarily on the human factors side of understanding how someone will interact with automation given the information they know about the automation and what information is being shared between the human and the automated system. Preliminary results show that trust in the automated system plays a critical role in how someone uses an AI, and subsequently how the team performs. -

MusicN/A 2000 - PresentSince the age of five, I have learnt a variety of instruments including violin (lessons from age 5-15), piano (lessons from age 8-15; current interest), guitar (lessons from age 12-16; current interest), clarinet (high school instrument), and singingMusic has been a huge part of my life ever since my parents let me take violin lessons at the age of five. Self-interest later led me to take on a variety of other instruments. With instruments, it's often not the skill of playing the instrument that has a huge impact on your life, but the skills that are acquired and enforced through practice and determination to master the instrument. Like all skills, learning them can be very challenging, and it was for myself. For the first few years, a lot of the responsibility of practicing and going to lessons was placed on my parents, and they kept me on track and constantly improving. The challenging component came as I aged and become more independent. As I was given more and more responsibility, there was an increase in required self-discipline, self-interest, and independence. Through the use of these skills, I was able to persist and further develop habits that have lead to success in a variety of life pursuits.

Masters ThesisDalhousie University Apr 2019 - Aug 2020Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is an optical imaging tool used to monitor neural activation through detecting changes in oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin. This study aims to determine whether NIRS can be used to monitor neural activity associated with lower limb movements, as well as comparing the capacity to do so between a research-grade and mobile system. The marching task used was expected to elicit medial neural activity in the sensorimotor cortex. The blocks in this study differed based on the system used (NIRScout or Axem), as well as the position placement of the mobile device. Both devices showed changes in activation associated with lower limb moments. The research-grade device showed a greater capacity to detect change in activity, and the mobile device showed more expected patterns of activation for lower limb movements. Knowledge gained from this study contributes to the development of mobile NIRS systems in monitoring motor-related neural activation. -

Nserc Student ResearcherDalhousie University Apr 2017 - Sep 2019I worked in the Psychology and Motor Control Lab at Dalhousie University, aiding with ongoing projects, data analysis, written reports, and designing new potential projects. This opportunity is one of the first chances I've had to apply not only my knowledge acquired from my ongoing degree but also to use that knowledge and extrapolate it to alternative situations. The significance of this experience to me is that it gave me a closer and more in depth look of relevant uses of my degree, and it gave me an opportunity to challenge myself through the application of a variety of skills. Some of those skills included problem-solving situations that I'd not yet seen, efficiently learning new content that can apply to current projects, and breaking down complex topics into their simplest forms so that they may be better understood and manipulated. -

Competitive RowerRow Nova Scotia Sep 2013 - Aug 2019Halifax, Canada AreaRowing competitively and recreationally throughout high school and into my university career.Rowing taught me discipline, commitment, and routine. Starting in grade 11 of high school, waking up became routine no matter what the circumstances were, no matter how tired you were, or no matter how many valid excuses you could come up with in your head. Being part of rowing showed me that there was no good reason not to get up early and start your day out right. Rowing also taught me discipline and commitment through its competitive environment. Having a bad day out on the water is very common and happens to everyone, but it was understanding that a bad day didn't define you as a rowing that helped build discipline and commitment. Despite the poor day, the expectation was that you still gave it your fullest effort, and you start again the next day with a fresh slate and push to make it better than the one that came before it. The skills that I learned through rowing can be applied to many aspects of life and I believe will help me succeed in a variety of fields.

Event OrganizerHalifax Jungle Run Dec 2016 - Apr 2018Halifax, Canada AreaThe Halifax Jungle Run is a student-founded/created event that raises funding for local causes. The Jungle Run is a 5k run that happens in Point Pleasent Park and works with a variety of groups such as Enactus, IWK Foundation, and the Running Room.Organizing the Halifax Jungle Run has provided me with so many opportunities to learn, apply, and develop skills in all aspects. The Jungle Run is the first large-scale community event that I took on and to be completely honest it was one of the most intimidating things I agreed to do. After agreeing to it, I made the decision to fully commit myself to the project to make it as successful as possible. While working my way through everything that I had planned for this event, I learned a lot about myself, what skills I already had available to me to help me be successful, and where I could work on skills to better prepare myself for the future. One of the largest things I learned while organizing this event was the value of connections. The volunteers that were recruited, the organizations that offered help, the people that make donations, all contributed in ways that were key to making this event not only possible, but also successful.

Tree PlanterSummit Reforestation & Forest Management Ltd. Apr 2016 - Aug 2016Smithers, BcTree planting was an experience that was both physically and mentally challenging in ways that helped me grow my understanding of my physical and mental capabilities. The solitude and hard labor of days at work tree planting gave me countless hours of thinking and self-reflecting, while also giving me a chance to learn to apply self-discipline and perseverance towards short and long term goals. While tree planting, energy conservation and time management play huge roles in your success. The opportunity to self-reflect allowed for better understanding of where you could be more efficient with time and energy. These are skills that I took with me and applied to my academic experience, allowing for more focused and productive studying, while also creating extra time to be involved in extracurricular activities, societies, and community events. -

Rky Camp Councillor And Program CouncillorYmca Canada Jul 2014 - Aug 2015Parham, OntarioRKY Camp is a small overnight outdoors summer camp. Counsellor Duties included counseling 10-15 campers, creating a fun, positive, safe and inclusive environment, and planning structured activities that engage and teach campers new skills.RKY Camp has had a huge impact on my life, even before I became a counselor. Moving towards the more senior years of being a camper, the focus of camp moves largely towards developing leadership skills. Camp provides opportunities to practice the leaderships skill they teach. Moving into to counselor position you learn to apply those skills in a variety of situations. Practicing leadership also aided with confidence in myself and my abilities to help with group facilitation. Camp was an opportunity to learn how to adapt to drastically changing environments and use problem-solving to resolve conflicts or situations that often needed critical thinking and a level head to determine a route of action that is not only effective but also efficient. -

Teaching AssistantKumon North America, Inc. Sep 2010 - Jun 2014Kingston, OntarioAiding children develop their reading and mathematics skills guidance and encouragement. At Kumon Learning Center, we strive to ensure that students not only keep up with their math and reading ability, but that they have the opportunity to excel and achieve goals through practice and determination. Working with children has always been a highlight in my life. Through Kumon I was given the opportunity to interact with children, helping develop positive relationship building skills, while also applying knowledge in Math and English to help others gain confidence in their academic abilities. From this experience, I was also able to learn new teaching skills and develop techniques for explaining concepts in lay terms so that they make sense to others. Skills acquired from this experience has impacted my life by better preparing me when the opportunity to help others understand concepts presents itself. Physics has always been a strong suit of mine, and I understand that it's not a subject that most find simple or easy to comprehend. Working my way through my university physics class I could see how my simple explanations of concepts increased the confidence of my peers on the subject matter. This skill I attribute to my years of simplifying and explaining concepts through Kumon. -
