Sagana advises family offices and endowments on impact investing topics, from building impact investment strategies across asset classes to identifying venture capital and private equity opportunities with positive environmental and societal impact. I supported the managing partners and team with business development in the UK, deal origination and internal investment process; however, my main focus was on portfolio support.Sagana was the lead investor in the December 2018 seed round of Colorifix, a synthetic biology start-up founded at the University of Cambridge in 2016. I worked closely with the founding team and CTO on business administration and operations as well as customer development and investor-facing activities. After 15 months of working with the team, I joined Colorifix as COO.

Odyssey Sensors is an IoT start-up developing low cost sensors and sensor networks aimed at improving productivity and sustainability for bottom-of-the-pyramid and low margin producers in agriculture and aquaculture markets. In 2013, Odyssey Sensors won the flagship entrepreneurship competition at University of Oxford, Tata Idea Idol (£5,000), out of 270 entrants. The team then won the main award for social entrepreneurship, the Skoll Venture Award (£20,000). Odyssey Sensors was part of the founding cohort of UK B Corps and was a leading international B Corps in each of the certification's first three years.

The venture arm of SYSTEMIQ makes early-stage (Seed-Series A) investments in technology companies with the potential to transform systems in the circular economy, energy and land use sectors. SYSTEMIQ supports asset-light models (SaaS, platforms, marketplaces and tools) and targeted IP-driven asset-light hardware innovation with significant scale potential. I supported the investment team with deal origination, network development and training on management due diligence for early-stage deals.

Impact Ventures UK (IVUK) was a £36m sector agnostic fund managed by LGT and launched in partnership with Berenberg. I focused on early-stage deals (Seed-Series A) and worked with investees across the full spectrum (technology-infrastructure). My role was broad-ranging encompassing origination through to portfolio management, as well as supporting on HR, fundraising and investor relations.

Homes for Good Investments was the first deal I led at Impact Ventures UK. It was an SPV that acquired, renovated and let out properties in the greater Glasgow area; the tenants were mainly vulnerable people who were struggling to access the private rental sector. I worked closely with the founder CEO, Susan Aktemel, at its inception and arranged a significant mortgage facility allowing us to purchase over a hundred properties as well as chairing the board until we recruited an external chair in 2017. Homes for Good has been recognised with a number of industry awards and was successfully exited by IVUK in 2020.

Post-MBA position with the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship and the Smith School for Enterprise and the Environment working on programmes and resources for early-stage ventures within the University of Oxford ecosystem. A key focus was planning the 2014 iterations of the Business to the Environment (B2E) start-up weekend and the Oxford Lean LaunchPad programme, both of which were a first for the university.

Worked with a team of eight students and fellows from the Entrepreneurship Centre to set up a seed fund investing £15-25k in start-ups of Oxford University students and alumni; in parallel, we also organised the inaugural Oxford Lean Launchpad, a business model development programme imported from California for which I was the Teaching Assistant (TA). Our team made the first two Oxford Seed Fund investments into Ace Consensus and Onfido, the latter of which has since been one of the UK's fastest growing technology companies, exiting in 2024 and delivering Oxford University’s largest ever return on a venture capital investment. The Seed Fund now has 24 portfolio companies.

Naturalmat is a leading eco-friendly mattress maker based in the UK. The board identified expansion into the hotel market as a strategic opportunity and I was seconded by the investors to drive this area of the business. This was a sales and marketing role in which I was making direct approaches to hotel groups and design firms, developing relationships with industry associations, and increasing the visibility of our product by creating a quarterly newsletter and writing pieces for green publications. It resulted in a couple of high profile sales.

Established a community focused jatropha biofuel company, serving local demand, with ex-partners of Envirocapital. Co-ordinated the set-up of the company from business planning through to the implementation of Viridesco’s farming project in Mozambique. Helped lead an external fundraising in November 2008 and as director, I worked on general administration, finance, investor relations and overall strategy.

Served as an interim director on the board of Belu Water Limited during which time the company was refinanced and restructured. This period featured a turnaround in business performance and the signing of an unprecedented marketing agreement with Wateraid, making Belu its exclusive bottled water partner. Belu has won a number of industry awards including The Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the 2017 Sustainable Development category.I remain a trustee of the Belu Foundation.

Involvement at all stages of the investment cycle - origination, execution and portfolio management – in a LOHAS focused venture capital partnership. For origination, the role included extensive market research, deal sourcing through an accumulated network of business contacts and the screening of all prospective investment opportunities by way of evaluating business plans and meeting management teams. For execution, the role included negotiating terms and assisting on shareholder agreements. For portfolio management, the role included being a board observer on the first investment (NaturalMat), a director on the second investment (Bagmondo) and a three-month secondee to the third investment (Engensa) to help set up a sales and marketing organisation.Investments were completed on a deal-by-deal basis by sourcing private capital and partners decided against raising a fund in 2010 due to a lack of critical mass in high-quality deal-flow and challenging fundraising conditions.In the first 18 months of business for Engensa, I sold 100kW+ of commercial and residential solar PV. Engensa was acquired by Hanergy in Q2 2013. Naturalmat was exited via a share buy-back in 2015.
