I joined the United States Navy in 2014 and from April of 2014 to March of 2016 I was in training at Naval Nuclear Power Training Command (NNPTC) in Charleston, SC. This time included attendance at Nuclear Field 'A' School and Nuclear Power School. After completing this phase of classroom training I went to Nuclear Prototype Training Unit (NPTU) to put theory to practice. I reported to the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) home ported in Coronado, CA on April 20, 2016 after finishing training and qualifying as a Reactor Operator on a submarine based, nuclear reactor plant. On CVN-71 I have accomplished completion of over 350 hours of maintenance on vital reactor plant electronic systems ranging from routine preventative maintenance to corrective maintenance in response to critical faults requiring replacement and extensive retests of electronic components. While on CVN-71, I also qualified Reactor Operator, Shutdown Reactor Operator, and Reactor Controls Maintenance Technician. Reactor Operator involved direct control and operation of the reactor plant on the aircraft carrier; which required closely monitoring plant parameters and noting trends to maintain operational reactor safety, often times in high stress situations.
