About Christopher J Chow

I am a journalist, activist, educator and media maker with professional experience and expertise in broadcasting, film, government, education, community organization programs, grant writing, and small business.I am the original Asian American TV news reporter in Northern California as the first Asian to be hired as a journalist by a TV station 1970. At KPIX CBS 5 San Francisco, Chris Chow became the first Asian American to win an Emmy Award for Best Documentary in the Bay Area (“Pastures of Plenty”) as well as Associated Press Awards of Excellence and Merit for investigative reporting (“Pastures of Plenty” and “Under Their Ancestors Shadows”) ; and shared a Dupont-Columbia Award in Broadcast Journalism (1978), as part of the “28 Tonight” newsmagazine program of public station KCET Los Angeles.As a filmmaker he led a team of fellow filmmakers to make the epic documentary film, “Fall of the I Hotel” (1982). Most recently he consulted on and appeared in the feature documentary films “Chinatown Rising” (2019) and “Like a Rolling Stone: The Life and Times of Ben-Fong Torres (2021).In other endeavors, Chris:• co-founded and chaired the Angel Island Immigration Station Historical Advisory Committee (1974) that saved the historic “Ellis Island of the West” from demolition and led to establishing it as a National Historic Landmark open to the public.• co-produced the first national Asian American Writers Conference; • co-founded the Asian Pacific Caucus of the Democratic National Committee and was media coordinator in the 1984 Democratic National Convention; • taught Asian Americans & Mass Media at San Francisco State University for ten years; • directed the Beacon Youth Center at a San Francisco high school;• developed community-based youth employment, HIV and drug abuse prevention programs at the Korean Community Service Center;• served as 1980 U.S. Census spokesperson in San Francisco Bay Area;• helped establish the San Francisco Department of the Environment as its Commission Secretary/Public Outreach Coordinator;• authored “Casting Our Voices: Chinese American Broadcast Pioneers” for the Chinese Historical Society of America;• co-produced “Media Images of Asian Americans” Town Hall for the Asian American Journalists National Convention (2001);• co-produced the AAJA Honor Roll of Founders and Pioneers for the 2010 national convention; • retired after 15 years as a public information officer for the California Public Utilities Commission; and• oversees Chow Associates, an employment, immigration and media consulting agency.
