I lost my beautiful two-year-old daughter, Emily, after a fatal medication error in March of 2006. After the tragic loss, The Emily Jerry Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, was created and established in 2009. The Emily Jerry Foundation has always been concentrated on affecting positive change in the overall “culture of medicine” and how it has been traditionally viewed and practiced. This primary focus and mission has been accomplished by getting the various leaders from around the United States and abroad, from government and industry, as well as, the experts from the various modalities in medicine, to take a closer look at the core “systems”, processes, and protocols that are currently being used in our nation’s medical facilities. By getting everyone to “rally” behind these patient safety related issues and by identifying technology and best practices that are proven to minimize the inherent “human error” component of medicine, I truly believe we can significantly reduce and, one day soon, eliminate the astounding number of deaths that occur every year, from preventable medical errors. With these thoughts in mind, I have always been a relentless patient safety and caregiver advocate who spreads a message of hope, change, forgiveness, compassion, and collaboration. Through my advocacy efforts, as well as, the programming of The Emily Jerry Foundation, I am always striving to be an active part of the overall “solution” to preventable medical errors, which by recent estimates are now the third leading cause of death in the United States (440,000+ lives a year in the United States).

President & CeoEmily Jerry Foundation Aug 2009 - PresentBeachwood, Ohio, UsWas able to help get “Emily’s Law” passed in 2009 in the state of Ohio, regulating pharmacy technicians. Prior to Emily’s Law, there was absolutely no oversight of pharmacy technicians by the Ohio State Pharmacy Board.Over the past decade, established The Emily Jerry Foundation as a leading force for a positive transformation in how our society, and more importantly, how the medical community, responds to preventable medical errors when they occur. This has been accomplished by inspiring a shift in the traditional thoughts, attitudes, and opinions about patient safety and getting everyone to focus on the “modification” of the internal systems, processes, and protocols, in medicine, before and after a catastrophic adverse event occurs.Have given more than 150 presentations, keynote speeches, and lectures, at various hospitals, universities, and before many professional organizations around the nation, like the American Hospital Association (AHA) and their individual state affiliates, the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP), and many others. Approximately 70%, or more, of these are CME or CE accredited.Working in conjunction with the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP), established a very objective national program called The Emily Jerry Foundation’s Pharmacy Technician Initiative and Scorecard. This program has been extremely successful in helping other states around the country to pass more comprehensive legislation similar to “Emily’s Law” to protect their residents from unintended pharmacy technician errors in the pharmacy.Successfully developed and implemented the Emily Jerry Foundation’s GUARDIAN ANGEL Pediatric Safe Label Program that is helping to significantly reduce the number of adverse drug events with children and neonates.Received the HIMSS 2014 Intelligent Hospital’s Award for Education -
