As a Field Service Technician, I help gather data in the field for our company's Public Works sector. At Continental Mapping, I have been getting exposed to the discipline of surveying, specifically engineering and boundary surveying. I have been working on field crews for surveying projects across the United States. Many projects consist of mapping streams, bridges, and culverts for the purpose of updating floodplain maps under FEMA. Data we collect is then analyzed in a GIS environment by our office staff. I am gaining hands-on experience with utilizing Trimble Geospatial technology such as the SX-10 total station and R10 and R8 GPS receivers.

As a hydrologic technician, I assisted the hydrologist of the Brush Creek Hayden Ranger District. We did field work in the Snowy Range and the Sierra Madre Range. My primary duties included inspecting irrigation ditches drawing water off National Forest land for issues such as erosion, mapping wetlands and streams (perennial, intermittent, or ephemeral) in timber sale areas to be protected, and inspecting decommissioned roads. I learned how to use Esri Collector for mapping features, as well as Trimble juno GPS units, with ArcPad.

Ecuador

I did a GIS and ecology internship through the American company, CISabroad, to Ecuador. I lived in and worked in Las Tunas, a small coastal community in the Manabí Province and San Cristóbal Island in the Galápagos. In Las Tunas, I performed geospatial work for the community and this included creating maps related to elevation and landcover, using data such as GPS waypoints and vegetation information I collected personally in the field or obtained online, such as DEMs. I made maps for a Jocotoco preserve I was working in as well, called the Río Ayampe Preserve. I also took aerial photos of the community and the Ayampe Preserve with my personal sUAV. In Las Tunas, I assisted biology students from the Universidad de Guayaquil with monitoring and assisting hawksbill sea turtle nests and hatchlings along the local beaches. I also helped care for six greater green macaws in the Ayampe Preserve with staff from Jocotoco. On San Cristóbal Island in the Galápagos, I helped out in the Galapaguera de Cerro Colorado, a captive breeding center for Galápagos tortoises and a new Jocotoco preserve in the island's highlands. In the Galapaguera, I assisted with feeding tortoises and doing park maintenance whereas in the highlands preserve, I was on a team that hiked around the highlands searching for nests of the critically endangered bird, the Galápagos petrel. I marked GPS waypoints for nesting sites and compiled them in a map for the preserve that I created.

I assisted a PhD student with his research involving the growth of lakes in the North Slope of Alaska and how as the lakes grow over time, they are releasing more methane into the atmosphere, My work involves georeferencing historical aerial photos for comparison of the lakes' size on the scale of decades in ArcGIS. I then trace polylines over the digitize lakes in order to get the size of their shoreline during that decade. We are hoping to get experience using ArcMap's Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) to take traced shorelines I've created to see how these lakes have grown over time, calculating the growth rates.

As a docent, I answer questions at the museum, record the number of visitors, clean exhibits, help set up for events, and I give tours as well as host groups that come to learn at the museum, such as elementary school groups. By working here, I can actively engage my interest in paleontology, share it with others, and become more effective at communication, specifically communicating my interests with other people. I have also volunteered with helping move around current and new exhibits such as our recently-acquired Colombian mammoth skull as well offer input to our collections manager regarding display orientation and appearance.

At EFTS, I have been tasked with surveying vegetation on oil well pads in the Red Desert in Wyoming. Using the GPS-enabled Reco WG-5 camera model, I collect data firsthand in the form of photographs at a 1m x 1m resolution of the ground around well pads. I consider how disturbances made by oil companies are affecting vegetation and I assess the overall health of the site related to presence of native versus nonnative vegetation derived from seed mixes planted at these reclamation sites, grazing, and I look at erosion potential at sites. I take 10 photographs of the ground at each site. I then process that data by classifying 25 cells (5m x 5m) with respect to what crosshairs in the photo are touching, whether that be a specific grass, a shrub such as rabbitbrush or sagebrush, a forb, rock, or bareground. We export these files to Excel and calculate their statistics, taking into account every cell that has been classified. We have done work outside of Wamsutter, Wyoming and Baggs, Wyoming, largely for the company, Southland Royalty LLC.

As a student field technician, I worked with other students and we were responsible for collecting data out in the field (around the Laramie, WY area/Happy Jack area of Interstate 80) for our supervising professor. We largely operated independently and were responsible for loading and unloading our own equipment, processing data, and cleaning up our work stations in the field. Our work was mostly concerned with the subsurface as we were mapping the subsurface for fissures in bedrock where there might be water potentially traveling below ground. We conducted ground resistivity tests and seismic tests mostly. We also helped other departments with a couple odd research jobs such as seismic work of a watershed in the Snowy Range, resistivity tests for a burned section of forest with a university botany field crew, and drilling for sediment cores at a reservoir in Cheyenne with people from the Civil Engineering department.

The Wyoming Dinosaur is the ninth best dinosaur museum in the entire world, boasting an extensive collection of fossils along with with easily-accessible dig sites which visitors may see and dig at, under guidance of staff. My specific duties at the Dinosaur Center during my month and-a-half-long internship involved: managing one of the museum’s dig sites (SI), doing a GIS project involving mapping the dig site that I managed, leading visitors on digs and preparing bones in the prep lab, and giving interactive museum tours, increasing interest in paleontology, citing dates, geography, and various dinosaur information for visitors. During my time here, I also received basic certifications for field work with bones and lab work for prepping fossils.
