Christopher Laurens designs and makes unique and beautiful contemporary furniture in his studio in Waterview, Auckland NZ. My goal is to create furniture that has long term relevance, that will be treasured and passed on to future generations.   I am Christopher Laurens - a contemporary fine furniture craftsman specialising in bespoke and commissioned work.From reused, reclaimed and sustainable materials I create furniture that has long term relevance, that will be treasured and passed on to future generations. The successful design of bespoke furniture is a collaborative process between you, the client, and me, Christopher Laurens. My own knowledge and design aesthetic is what you are investing in, and I see it as my role to create a design that you would be proud to own."I want my furniture to speak for itself; I want the detail to be subtle. I want each piece of furniture I make to reveal its handcrafted honesty, its texture and its colour.”Design to manufacture - the process.Designing a project may take a short time period or be as long as two months. The completion of the piece may take a similar period, depending on the workshop’s programme.The first stage of the process is meeting to discuss requirements and ideas with the client. Next, concept sketches are prepared for consultation with the client. Advice is given on what timber to use, appropriate finishes and how the design is to be manufactured. The project is reviewed, materials and finish are finalized and an estimation of cost is given.At this point in the process there is no charge but all drawings and designs remain the property of Christopher Laurens if the project does not proceed.Once the client has approved the project, a written agreement will confirm the design details, the total cost of the project and a fixed timeframe for completion. Depending on the size and complexity of the commission this can take around 12–14 weeks to complete.
