Design engineer on several projects including:- A water capturing device to stop water droplets leaking out of refrigerator water dispensers by harnessing water’s surface tension characteristics.- Airflow altering devices to reduce aerodynamic drag on trucks for Tirsan.- Improving the mechanical and aerodynamic aspects of Sunatolia 3 (Anadolu University’s solar vehicle) by re-engineering the steering, braking, suspension systems, chassis, canopy and overall vehicle’s aerodynamic shape. All mechanical and electrical systems were tested on a dummy vehicle space frame before being installed on the actual vehicle.Noteworthy Achievements:I competed with this team, by invitation, in the 2016 Sasol Solar Challenge. During the race I and another team member the steering system which used go-kart pinion gears and chains to transfer the turning moment from the steering column to the centre rack and pinion system. This was essential due to the car failing to pass the safety checks for the original system. The design, build and installation in 1.5 days from seeing the car for the first time. Significantly improved the UKZN solar vehicle aerodynamic efficiency via STAR-CCM+ (CFD) and Autodesk Inventor (CAD). Airflow tripping via turbulence generating and or/mitigating devices was investigated. Reducing the pressure difference while only slightly increasing skin friction resulted in lesser total aerodynamic drag. Devices found to improve the overall aerodynamics include: carbon fibre wheel spoke covers mitigate turbulence around the wheels; v-shaped vortex generators near the airflow transitioning zone on the canopy; this point/line was found through CFD testing and theoretical calculations.
