    Department of Physics, Dr. Loren Hough Lab Independent project: Deuteration of Tetrahymena in preparation for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance In this project, I optimized labeling conditions in order to Deuterate Tubulin for NMR. Deuterating Tubulin would shift the protein into the readable size range for NMR by dampening the signal read from Hydrogen. In order to achieve a readable spectrum Tubulin would have to be at least 70% labeled. I only achieved up to 35% labeling due to toxicity of cells. After this project was stopped I worked with graduate students to contribute to their projects and taught incoming undergraduates laboratory techniques and concepts.

    Department of Cell and Development Biology, Dr. Jeffrey Moore Lab Independent project: Characterization of functional residues in the C-terminal tail of Beta Tubulin In this project, I used C-terminal tail (CTT) mutants to identify the key residues involved in Microtubule dynamics and Chromosome segregation. Using growth assays, a chromosome loss assay, and FRAP microscopy I measured growth rates, chromosome loss rates, and Microtubule rescue and catastrophe rates. My findings identified key functional residues involved in kinetochore attachment, chromosome segregation, and microtubule dynamics.
