As a patient safety and simulation fellow I am part of a team that analyzes and identifies errors, risks, hazards, and opportunities for improvement throughout the healthcare system to create an environment and culture of safe and quality medical care. Additionally, I work with GME for improvement of the patient safety curriculum and develop new training courses for residents, fellows, and faculty. I also develop case scenarios in the UF Center for Simulation Education and Safety Research to improve physician competence and teamwork. Lastly, I serve as an academic clinic attending to the internal medicine residents in their continuity clinics.

Assisted surgical staff, (surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and scrub techs) with routine duties including cleaning the ORs between cases, patient transport, patient positioning, and occasionally scrubbing to assist in cases.

Served as a co-investigator of a retrospective data mining project comparing patient outcomes and characteristics of those treated at designated burn centers compared to those treated at trauma centers using the National Burn Repository and the National Trauma Database. We found significant differences in several variables when compared by %TBSA of burn including in total length of stay, ICU days, ventlator days, and mortality.Presented at the 41st Annual Meeting of the American Burn Association by Dr. Eakin; titled: Comparison Outcomes for Burn Patients Cared for in Trauma Centers Based on Two National Registries.

Began as a volunteer bench lab position and grew into a paid position as a student researcher performing laboratory experiments and animal husbandry while investigating the WWOX tumor suppressor gene and protein and its molecular interactions in several oncogenic pathways. My bench work fed into a wide range of studies but I was specifically acknowledged for my work in two publications (below) investigating the necessity of wwox in fetal bone development and with knock-out of wwox leading to marked progression of stomach adenocarcinoma compared to wild-type and heterozygous cage-mates.-Journal of Biological Chemistry. 2008 August 1;283(31):21629-39.
