I am a recent May 2013 graduate from Northern Illinois University where I successfully obtained a graduate level certification in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) after graduating in May 2012 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Applied Meteorology and Bachelor of Science Degree in Geography concentrated in Natural Environmental Systems with an undergraduate certification in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and a Homeland Security studies certificate in Environmental and Hazards Risk Assessment. I am currently looking to obtain a position in Meteorology, Geography or a related Physical Science field. I am always willing to learn a new skill whether it be a computer language, computer software, data processing, taking measurements or getting familiar with new scientific equipment. I am always looking to broaden and improve upon both my geographical and meteorological skills in any way possible. I am I highly motivated individual who is always looking for new and exciting opportunities and who will take advantage of an excellent opportunity if presented with one.My background includes projects for groups such as the National Weather Service, Allstate Insurance and the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning. In my academic background I have also completed independent projects in such areas as modeling growth of a city 20 years in the future to creating a cartographic map depicting significant tornadoes affecting major cities in Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia in Adobe Illustrator.I am looking for an opportunity within a company to showcase my skills and abilities to show what I can do. I am willing to move at my own expense unless relocation expenses are eligible to be paid on my behalf to relocate from my current location to wherever in the 50 states an employment opportunity presents its self.I look forward to hearing from you soon

Intern (Assistantship)Cmap Sep 2012 - Jun 2013Sears Tower Chicago IlWorked at the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) in Downtown Chicago on a parcel based land-use inventory project with three fellow post graduate students. We used Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to update the agency’s 2005 land use inventory to the year 2010 based on high resolution aerial photography. To help support the aerial photo interpretation we used additional ancillary GIS reference layers including Dun & Bradstreet business databases that were geocoded with NAVTEQ centerline files to precisely define the land use of each parcel. The land-use classification was innovative for a regional planning organization as it included over 50 categories of land uses which were designed to be used in a forecast model of transportation demand and urban development. In addition to the day to day GIS production activities we had weekly meeting with the senior analyst to give feedback on the processes that were designed for the coding. The weekly senior analyst meetings also included demonstrations and discussions of ArcGIS Python scripts used in the land-use assignment algorithms. Our team participated in the coding of over 2.5 million parcels within the seven-county CMAP jurisdiction. We concluded our ten month project by being invited to participate in the quality control of the completed GIS land-use inventory. The senior analyst developed a Python script that randomly selected one percent of the parcels within a Township which we then investigated with protocols that we employed for identifying parcels whose land uses were miss-coded. In this quality control process we were able to see the overall necessity for achieving an accurate GIS database as well as giving feedback to the senior analyst on possible systematic errors introduced in the production process.

InternNational Weather Service May 2009 - Aug 2009Lincoln, IlWrote local forecast discussions under guidance of NWS forecasters utilizing such things as upper air data, numerical models, metar data, satellite data and radar through the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWHIPS). In addition to doing forecasts, I took part in guided learning including training on the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (WES) in which past weather events and archived model data are used to improve forecasting ability. In addition COMET modules were done to improve knowledge of what was being done at the office for preparation for possible future employment at a National Weather Service Office.. In addition to guided learning, a research project was completed that was then presented to all interested parties at the forecast office including the Meteorologist In Charge (MIC). This project is on their web site at http://www.crh.noaa.gov/ilx/?n=casestudies (note that the sound file meant to be with this project did not effectively post to the project as was intended). I also assisted during severe weather events documenting severe weather watches and warnings for the office's files, assisted on some hydrologic and COOP quality control, took down, encoded, and transmitted current observations including cloud cover and type under the guidance of NWS forecasters, assisted in answering phone inquiries from the public about weather information with oversight from NWS forecasters and assisted a forecaster at an outreach event that included such information as severe weather and flood preparedness.

InternWmbd Tv May 2008 - Aug 2008Peoria, IlPut together forecast graphics for the 5PM, 6PM, and 10PM WMBD weather and for the 9PM subsidiary FOX weather. These graphics included the daily climatological numbers, current radar and satellite, current weather in Peoria and across the forecast area, model forecast graphics, general forecast graphics, 8 day outlook graphics, and graphics for interesting weather tidbits and news. In addition, when chief Meteorologist Chuck Collins was on location, I ran and troubleshot the graphics including guiding the head news person through a forecast if contact was lost with the on location crew. I also communicated between the meteorologist and the control room during cases of severe weather and kept the meteorologist informed when new warning information came out when he was live on the air.
