I am currently an Associate Professor of Learning and Teaching in the School of Creative Arts, and the Centre for Learning, Access, and Student Success at the University of Hertfordshire.My research and teaching sit broadly within US literary and cultural studies, and I have published widely on twenty-first-century US literature and culture. I am Vice-Chair of the British Association of American Studies (BAAS), and the co-editor of the European Journal of American Culture, and co-editor of the Seaford Review poetry journal.My teaching philosophy is that students should have safe and inclusive spaces to learn. Student-centred learning - where class discussion, student ideas and collective group activities - is key to my practice. I am also invested (and have led sessions on) diversification and 'decolonisation' in the curriculum. My two monographs with Palgrave Macmillan examine the persistence of the past - especially histories of racist violence, from slavery onwards - in contemporary cultural texts about the US South. I am currently working on two co-edited books - one on affect in literary studies pedagogy, one on the millennial novel - and a new monograph on nonhumans in queer US literature. I have also published poetry and short stories, including a pamphlet, in online journals.
