Helping to fly Dragon to the International Space Station and back

Specialist in Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) and Communications and Information Systems. Career included postings to the Air Force headquarters (2014-2018), a tactical communications unit (2009-2012) project management for systems acquisition (2012). Deployed on military operations in Afghanistan (2011).

- Led development of technical requirements for Project AIR7003 (General Atomics MQ-9B), budget $1-2 billion. Particular focus on avionics, control, satellite communications and flight software. Participated in gate reviews.- Contributed to risk management framework and operational procedures for integrating large unmanned aircraft into civil airspace. Led to first flight of Heron unmanned aircraft from a civil airport in Australia.- Coordinated a DoD-wide multidisciplinary working group to solve problems specific to unmanned aircraft, seeking to normalize unmanned aviation in Australia. Included significant reform of airworthiness regulations, training and medical standards.- Frequent presenter at industry conferences

- Led a team of 13 communications technicians at a major airfield in Afghanistan- Managed complex communications network supporting aircraft operations, military command and control, logistics and administration- Design, procurement and delivery of ground system upgrades enabling a doubling of flight rate for Heron unmanned aircraft while minimizing disruption to ongoing operations- Real-time problem solving and implementation of contingency solutions following failure of critical communication systems- Continuous efforts to improve network redundancy, security and performance.- Frequent liaison with coalition nations including USA, UK, Canada and Germany.

- Led a team conducting planning, execution and coordination of military operations and exercises. Up to 30 tasks across the globe were managed simultaneously- Liaison with many other government agencies, including foreign militaries- Managed a workfare of 120 technicians to maintain technical integrity equipment including satellite communications systems, computer networks, radios, cryptographic equipment, radar and airfield systems- Deployed a surveillance radar to Darwin Airport to provide ATC service while the primary radar was repaired, ensuring commercial and military aviation could safely continue- Established and maintained communications systems to support major military exercises including Talisman Sabre (Rockhampton Airport) and Pitch Black (Darwin Airport and multiple remote locations)- Planned and deployed communications support for natural disaster relief including cyclones, earthquakes, tsunamis and wildfires. Usually required a response at short notice (less than 24 hours).- Operational test and evaluation of new air traffic control systems.
