Rolling Contact Fatigue is caused by the wheel rail interface and is increased by geometric design forces. I would test these sites to specific company standards and at predetermined frequencies and action these defects accordingly. All documentation was subject to six monthly and yearly audits. These projects were designed to meet medium to long-term requirements of the Business. These requirements were upgrading and holding works (extending the asset life) prior to long term investment and or disposal of obsolete Infrastructure assets. My role within CAPEX as a Technical Lead was to take control and manage these projects from a compliance and technical aspect. The compliance aspect was based around a process called AMP. (Asset Management Plan) The documentation within this process covered all stages of the project including: notification of asset change, staged reports, certificate of completion and supplementary documentation which is unique to the asset within the project. The technical aspect of my role was to liaise with Section Managers (SM) and Route Asset Managers (RAM) and create a specification / schedule of works that would meet both the SM and RAM requirements. The RAMs requirements are based around budget and life cycle. The SMs evolve around reducing maintenance costs and extending reliability. From this I would create the detailed plan of work to be carried out including the methods, components, tolerances and ultimately the cost and budget requirements. Other aspects that also fell within my responsibilities were Health and Safety and particularly risk assessment and method statements that were specific to the project. The opportunity to take the lead in this complicated project. The main challenges that I experienced and overcame were; maintaining high productivity levels with a limited track access time. This was accomplished by creating working relationships with operations colleagues so the small track access window was not interrupted by traffic at night and using a higher number of temporary staff over mechanical methods this improved productivity and reduced costs.
