I have been his teacher in two courses (Independent Study, Computer and Network Security), his undergraduate research mentor for one summer, and his honors thesis adviser. Christopher has unparalleled maturity, work ethic, engagement, and initiative. He owns up to his responsibilities and devotes himself to making a difference in all he does. I have entrusted him with many important tasks and never been less than enthusiastically pleased with his results. In the NSF project, "Frameworks for ns-3", Christopher has been instrumental in bringing our software base to release quality. In this project, we are developing support software for the ns-3 network simulator to automate the experimental workflow and to make it more immediately usable by novices and power users alike. In order to work on this project, Christopher had to learn to work with Python and the Twisted library, which he did totally on his own and in almost no time. He took ownership of the code written by previous students, extended it substantially, made it work efficiently, tested it well, and documented it. In one year, Christopher's efforts allowed us to write one conference paper and two posters. We presented together the paper "SAFE: Simulation Automation Framework for Experiments" at the 2012 Winter Simulation Conference (WSC), in Berlin, Germany, where he also presented (on his own) the poster "User Interfaces for the Simulation Automation Framework for Experiments". Additionally, he designed and presented our early work on SAFE at the Workshop for ns-3, in Desenzano, Italy. Even though the development of these products of scholarship happened under the pressures of time and expectation of high quality, Christopher stayed focused, calm, and productive throughout the process. In the two international conferences he attended with me, seeing his self-confidence, level of technical knowledge, and public speaking skills, people expressed that they couldn't believe he was only an undergraduate - they immediately assumed that he was a Ph.D. student. Christopher's honors thesis is on methods for scientific data visualization. In this work, he's shown much independence in searching the literature for the fundamental publications in the field. He selected the best software libraries to use in the implementation of his web-based data visualization component and learned to use them in very little time. By the time he defends his work, Christopher will have made solid and important contributions to the SAFE project. With all these technical qualifications, one might think that Christopher is "only" a superior computer science student. He is driven by scientific inquisitiveness and intellectual curiosity across a variety of domains, what makes him a very interesting person. I have the highest confidence that Christopher will be a key player in whatever he chooses to do with is career."
